Many thanks to rfarinha for this amazing hit !
In March 2014 I traveled to Portugal and exported (= carried) ~ 15 :note-5: Notes (all in a very good condition or uncirculated) at all to the area of Lisbon ... now one of this notes was found again in a "triple".

BTW - again many thanks to Dawizz for this hit (from Cartaxo to Sintra), that makes me still really proud !

Thx. and greetings to all trackers !

Hello from Valenciennes!

A good place to start is the program of the last EBT-meeting. It covers most of the landmarks in Lisbon and around.

What are looking for in particular? Museums? Parks? Football stadiums? Do you have a car?

Maybe you want to see Óbidos, which is a Medieval village inside the old walls. You can drive along the Tagus river where there are some castles, or head south to Èvora, which has Unesco protected heritage from the roman times. Or may just want to spend time at the beach..., then Setúbal and Troia would be interesting as well.

I loved Alfama, the old parts of the city on the hillside. I'm a bit of a railway fan, so I adored the old wooden trams, the winding streets, etc. I also loved going to Cascais on the suburban train, with long stretches along the coast. Belem, Oeiras and Estoril are along this line. I haven't tried the line to Sintra yet.

Here are two good starting points (both in English and written by locals): You may also tell us what you are thinking of and I'm sure several Portuguese will be glad to help with advice here.

Include in your list a train-ride to Sintra. You do not want to miss it. "Palácio da Pena" is the place to see. (unless it is raining)
I find the aquarium ("Ocenário") very interesting, and it is inside the "Expo'98" part of the city, you can get there by Metro.

We have just booked our summer holidays and will be staying two weeks in Colares.

What are the "must see" places around here?

These are the places I wouldn't miss if I were your guide for 2 weeks:

Sintra village
  • start at Posto de Turismo (tourism information office), where they are extremely helpful and care about personal tastes, time constraints and budgets (if you want to plan your meals, for example, they will not recommend you tourist traps)
  • a walk in the town
  • have a freshly baked travesseiro (pastry) at Piriquita (the link, by the way, is from a very good site about Lisbon and surroundings you may want to browse, because it is made by editorially independent locals who love our town)
  • the castle and the two palaces are worth a visit too but you probably will have to choose: if 2 out of 3, skip Palácio da Pena; if one only, it really depends on your interests; if you drive up, be sure to go a little further, to Cruz Alta
Quinta da Regaleira
Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla (recently renovated, I still haven't been there after the renovation!)
driving tour on the backroads of Sintra (for example, the one that takes you to the Capuchos Convent)
+
Cabo da Roca (westernmost point of continental Europe, also an extra dot on EBT and a place where they know what Eurobilltracking is)
Praia do Guincho
+
Azenhas do Mar is worth a small detour
this municipality doesn't have restaurants with the best quality/price ratio; for that, you'll be better off at the neighbouring Cascais and Oeiras, or of course Lisboa, if you find the right places, and I won't mind recommending you; I would book a table at Páteo do Petisco for example (hard to find though)
finally, if you can afford it, anything done at the Penha Longa Spa is guaranteed to be one the best spa experiences you can have in the entire world

then, in Lisboa (in no particular order, and only the absolutely unmissable):
  • Tram 28
  • walking tour in Alfama
  • fado at Mesa de Frades (after dinner, booking necessary; skip the dinner, which is very expensive and not worth the price; there are many fado houses and some of them will be more often recommended, but ths one has top notch singers together with being an outstanding place)
  • Pastéis de Belém
  • Oceanário de Lisboa (aquarium definitely worth a detour for a three hour visit)
If you're looking for items in any other category (museums, handicraft shops, music, whatever), feel free to ask, I'll be glad to give my opinion.
