Post by Burky »

FRIDAY, Aug. 21st

* Trip to Bratislava

08:30 – in front of the Südbahnhof-building (Wiedner Gürtel 1, 1100 Wien)

Station: Südbahnhof
Public transit: Tram: D, O, 18
Bus: 13A, 69A
Schnellbahn: numerous lines

Alternate Station: Südtirolerplatz
Public transit: U-Bahn: U1

> Charge for the trip: 14 € (including round trip to/from and public transit in Bratislava)

At 09:15 at the latest, we leave or meeting point, to board the train to Bratislava (ER 2516). The ride, which will last approximately one hour, crosses the Danube, runs through the Marchfeld, crosses the border on the river March (the former iron curtain) and finally brings us to the Slovakian capital, Bratislava. The arrival at Bratislava’s Hlavná Stanica station is scheduled for 10:37. From there we can either take tram line 13 (to Poštová) or walk via the president’s palace to our next meeting point.
Please don’t forget to bring a valid identification for travelling abroad.

* Bratislava

11:15 – in front of the OTP banka (Hurbanovo námestie 7, 811 06 Bratislava)

Station: Poštová
Public transit: Tram: 13

UPDATE:
> Charge for the guided tour: 2 € (optional, you don't have to participate)

Only some 60 kilometers from Vienna, much more than just the Danube connects these two cities. We will see some of this during our walking tour of Bratislava, which will last approximately one hour.
Following the city excursion, everybody has time to explore the city on his/her own (and find Euro-bills). We have been informed that banks should be open until 16:00, and also heard rumors, that banks charge a fee for changing more than 20 bills.
We will leave Bratislava by train (Zr 2529) at 15:00, to return to Vienna for a ride on the Giant Ferris-Wheel. Those who don’t want to take that ride, or think they might need more time in Bratislava, can take a later train. The next connections to Vienna leave Bratislava’s Hlavná Stanica at 15:50 (ER 2533) and 17:00 (Zr 2535).

* Ride on the Giant Ferris-Wheel

16:30 – Giant Ferris Wheel (Riesenradplatz 1, 1020 Wien)

Station: Praterstern
Public transit: U-Bahn: U1, U2
Tram: O, 5
Bus: 80A, 82A
Schnellbahn: numerous lines

> Charge for this ride: 8 €

Either en route to the Giant Ferris-Wheel, or while gathering there, we will collect the fee, and then take a joint ride on this Viennese landmark. When weather conditions are good, you can even see as far as Bratislava.

* Evening at the Heurigen – 10er Marie

18:45 – Heurigen 10er Marie (Ottakringer Straße 222-224, 1160 Wien)

Station: Ottakring
Public transit: U-Bahn: U3
Tram: 46
Bus: 48A
Schnellbahn: S45

Alternate Station: Johannes-Krawarik-Gasse
Public transit: Tram: 2

For the evening we are – as is Viennese tradition – visiting a marvelous Heurigen (wine tavern), where we will rest from the day’s exertions, having a glass of wine (or two). Everything will be charged on individual bills (i.e. you pay for what you eat and drink).
