number of notes entered (2009 to 2012)

Postby jonman » Fri Sep 07, 2012 7:24 pm

i was looking at the average number of notes entered per day and did a ranking with the different countries. i was very interested in how the countries developed in the last few years and as a reference i took the year 2009, which was so far the best year of ebt. as a result i have two different rankings.

1st: countries sorted by development of the number of notes entered per day (2009-2012)
(example: belgium had 4591.25 notes entered per day in 2009, in 2012 it was 5176.38, so they improved by 12.74 %)

first of all, congrats, monaco, for a really good improvement this year :D
of course you would expect estonia at the top, as it wasn’t yet a euro country in 2009, but monaco even beat them. the best ranking of the bigger ebt countries is belgium at number 7. the top trio of ebt, germany, finland and netherlands, can be found on numbers 9, 16 and 13, with only germany having improved.
the second ranking will take into account how big the contribution (or the negative influence) was to the situation of ebt in total. in 2009 the number of notes entered per day was 44.776, in 2012 it’s 39.995. how big was a country’s share of this loss? i don’t have any time to post the ranking until later tonight, until then feel free to discuss the numbers

here comes the second ranking saying to what degree each country has contributed to the overall development of ebt from 2009 to 2012. the total loss of notes that were entered per day was 4,781 (44,776 - 39,995). belgium, having entered 585.13 more notes per day in 2012 than in 2009, has a percentage of - 12.24 %. of course a negative percentage is good in this ranking, because they did all they could to not make the loss of notes bigger. also the sum of all the percentages should be 100 % if i calculated correctly

this second ranking i find a lot more significant and it leaves me with some questions. well, we know how estonia ended up on the second place, but what is it that makes belgium so successful, for example. very different ebt countries, like germany and ireland, show up in the top. on the other hand you can find the established ebt countries austria and finland with the weakest numbers. i’m really happy about the activity of the finnish users on this site and i’m amazed seeing their hit ratio, but also i’m very interested in why the number of notes entered in finland has dropped by nearly a third compared to 2009. you can see pairs of neighboring countries, that one would feel compelled to compare, like netherlands and belgium, or germany and austria, at very opposite ends of this ranking. if anybody has any ideas on factors that influence the number of note entries in a country i would be very interested to hear about this, maybe the countries at the bottom of this ranking can learn from others’ experiences as well

Thank you for sharing these stats.

My first reaction would be to confirm the saying that Stats often do show what people intend to show. Depending on the calculations, on the coice of parameters, you have established a ranking, but you could have choosen other parameters such as nb. of users, nb. of hits. You could also have ponderated your calculations with regards to local population.

Indeed your ranking overestimates the influence of local particularities. Looking at countries such as Malta or Monaco, you are simply looking at the performance of two users EWRI and Soleyeverte. If you would like to make a comparison you should not compare France with Monaco, but Monaco with the French Departments. You could therefore see an increase of EBT- activity in the French Department of Haut-Rhin or Bas-Rhin, with the increase of some users in these departments.

EBT is full of local particularities : Wien and Helmbrecht are hot-spot. I thought that Germany had a great hit-ratio untill I went on a holiday in Baden-Würtemberg and registered 4500 and got 2 hits... less than in France because this part of Germany has less users. The Parisian Area has quite a lot of users, but a rather low hit ratio because we are 12,000,000 inhabitants overthere, more than an entire country like Belgium or the Netherlands.

Now, having said this, your stats have an interest and I would lke to see more of this.

I would like to see figures related to the entire EBT-population over the years. Indeed I am annoyed to see a decrease in new users since a couple of years, showing that our hobby does no longer attract new users as it used to be. The reason for this decrease should be worth a discussion (especially at the Baord).

I love statistics and would like to see a lot more of it in ebt. I wish the statistics area could be expanded, updating "secondary" statistics could be done once a week or once a month as I know that 100000000 notes takes time to process.

What comes to ebt and new users is a _big_ question. There are some newspaper/internet articles accross Europe but is it enough?
I have been interested in notes since I was child, as eight years old I began to write down serial numbers, to see if I had this note earlier in my hands. That was in 1979 and after 50 notes I understood that this is a mission impossible, it takes too much time to check the earlier serial numbers – written on paper.

It was so late as October 2008 I got to know that there is a site like eurobilltracker, by a random reference when I was googling something. This happened 5 years after I had moved out of Eurozone. I feel sad when I think the years 2002 and 2003 when I could have entered a lot of notes, nowadays I can do it only on holidays in Eurozone, and I am satisfied with my 1500 notes entered in past 4 years.

The power of ebt is not in mega-users, it is in the amount of small-users who can tell about hobby to their friends.

I think that the front page of ebt should be renewed, to be more interesting for those who are visiting the site first time.
Maybe a link to some user experiencies? hmm…
A possibility to check if the note has been entered before, without creating account?

I know these features should have suggested at another discussion area, but I don't expect any changes if I write them there. Some minor updates are done but not major ones. The front page looks oldfashioned and (younger) people do want a fresher style and more interactivity nowadays.
