2 €uro commemorative & ALL the series

New 2euro coin "The Great War Centenary 14-18"
Re: 2 €uro commemorative & ALL the series
I still find it odd to commemorate the beginning of a war. But if that is what the Belgian government wants, oh well. Calling a war "great", hmm, if that is a common term, I can live with it. The poppy makes sense, and the design is not "over-loaded".
What I do not like at all, however, is the date: Just "2014-18"?? Sure, the word "centenary" explains it, but "1914-2014" would have been better in my opinion. Or maybe a big "1914-18" followed by a smaller 2014 date below. This way the English (!) text would have been superfluous ...

I have to agree with you on the dates, they don't make much sense. The Great War is a common term in both English, French (la Grande Guerre) and Dutch (De Grote Oorlog), as it was a heavier war then the second in terms of loss of lives, of perceived bravery, and, especially around Verdun or Ieper, of impact on the landscape. Each year, many 100's of bombs are dug up in and around the trenches. The 1st World War was a slaughterhouse, the fighting never stopped, whereas the 2nd was brutal, but in the first stage, the fighting was quickly over, Belgium, the Netherlands and France beaten and occupie

"Great War" is, indeed, a common term, because no other war before it was anything like it in terms of scope and scale.
Re: 2 €uro commemorative & ALL the series
Well, to me "Great War" sounds strange for two reasons. One, in my books the terms "great" and "war" do not go along very well anyway. Another reason is that in Russia and some neighboring countries the term "Great Patriotic War" (with that added word in the middle) refers to WW2, specifically 1941-45. But as I wrote, the Great War term is not my main pet peeve when it comes to this coin.

Great is not necessarily positive... But it's true, for the image building of the former Soviet Union, and thus the current Russian Federation, WWII is the war that shaped their history most. Also for the Netherlands, or most Scandinavian countries, WWII was the Big War, as they didn't participate in the First... I just wanted to explain why, for Belgians, Brits and French, WWII is still so much alive. November 11th, Armistice Day, is an official holiday, here, Liberation Day isn't anymore...

The Great War - that's how the First World War was called before the second one happened. But still it's pretty strange to mint coins for such an "anniversary".
What does it say on the coins? I don't speak German.Helge wrote:New 2€ commemorative coins in 2015

Second one is "25 years anniversary of German Unity", "We are one nation/ people".
Re: 2 €uro commemorative & ALL the series
The building on the left (Hessen coin, designed by Heinz Hoyer) is the Paulskirche in Frankfurt. After the 1848 revolution it became the seat of the first democratically elected German parliament; today it is a museum and memorial.
The second coin, designed by Bernd Wendhut, won the second prize in a design competition (20 Years of Unity) five years ago. For 2015 the artist just had to modify his original design a litte.
What is always a little confusing when it comes to newer German commemorative coins: The abbreviation used for the country is the "D" that you also find on car license plates, instead of the "DE". So it can easily be confused with a mint mark - for that they usually pick a somewhat smaller font size.

Re: 2 €uro commemorative & ALL the series
First, something I posted in the 2007 thread that, perhaps, sits better here:
D-day Anniversary 1944-2014
I was so happy to find this, probably more exciting than a short distance hit I'm sorry the picture doesn't show much of the detail, it really is rather beautiful.
And now, my find of the day (yesterday):
