Post by ART »

According to the agreements with EU, Andorra will be able to emit euro beginning from 2013. 80% of the coins will be in circulation obligatorily.

Mind that only coins will be issued, not banknotes.

Good to hear this.

So the best title for this topic is actually "Andorra signs agreement to mint Euro coins starting 2013".
My NIG stats have finally disappeared. My EBTST stats are still available.

Right. Andorra will not be in the EMU but can - as from 1 July 2013 - issue euro coins. The monetary agreement is similar to what the EU has with San Marino, Monaco and the Vatican. Seems there will be a design competition, see http://www.diariandorra.ad/index.php?op ... m&id=13955" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; What I found amusing is that the newspaper article shows Frizio's design suggestion. :)

Seems that adapting Andorran law to the European regulations listed in the Monetary Agreement takes more time than originally expected. The government now expects the first Andorran euro coins to come in January 2014. http://forum.ad/2012/10/02/cinca-preveu ... -del-2014/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (text in Catalan).

(Edit 2013-02-03) At the World Money Fair, the director of the Andorran Mint basically said the same thing. http://www.amisdeleuro.org/news.php?lg=fr&news_id=603" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (text in French). Let's see what happens. :)

The government has annunced a contest to select the design of the coins:

2 €: Andorran coat of arms
1 €: The Valley House ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_de_la_Vall" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
10 - 20 - 50 cent: Andorran romanesque art
1 - 2 - 5 cent: Andorran landscape, nature, fauna and flora

The dadline for the submissions of entries will be 16 April, the first coin samples are expected in September.

The winners were chosen last Thursday.

The next steps will be the EU approval and later printing in France and Spain. Nice Andorran euro coins will enter real circulation (that is, not only for collectors) in January.

Note: maybe this topic should be moved to the Euro-Notes and Coins Board forum.

It will be quite a thrill finding one of those (the mint in Spain keeps me hopeful that they won't be too difficult to find in our little corner of Europe :) ).
