A cheaper way is going by train. The train doesn't stop at Plaça Catalunya, but it stops at Passeig de Gràcia, where you can change to "metro" (underground).

I don't know personally about that topic because I have never needed an hotel in my city. The hotels are more expensive in the center. It could be a better option to search other options like Vall d'Hebron, el Clot, L'Hospitalet, places with metro connection . . . There are also options near Sants railstation, but I think it'll be also an expensive option, but you can try.
Metro operates during all the day, and many nights. It's quite fast.
Perhaps, another EBT users who had booked yet hotels / hostals... can explain your elections.
