W-EBTM 2014 Post your candidacy here!

Post by eddydevries »

Now we're cooling down from the S-EBTM 2013, you can start thinking about the Winter EBT Meeting of next year.

In this topic, you can volunteer to organize Winter EBT Meeting 2014.

Because this year there was enough time to organise both the Winter- and the Summer-meeting (unlike previous years), the BoD wishes also the next Winter meeting to be organized not too late.
The best period would be in the winter, so up until the end of March.

Requirements/conditions/guidelines for organizers:
  • Two organizers or more. One will be appointed as the main organizer
  • The main organizer is at least 21 years old
  • The main organizer should be able to communicate in English
  • At least one of the organizers should have participated in an official international Eurobilltracker meeting
  • At least one of the organizers should live in or know the city where the event will take place very well
  • At least one of the organizers should have organized a national EBT meeting
Requirements/conditions/guidelines for candidate city:
  • The city should have a certain touristic appeal. International EBTM participants will stay for more than one day and they should be able to see more things than they will see on the meeting day.
  • The city should be located near an international airport.
  • The city should have a railroad station, preferable an international railroad station
  • There should be youth hostels nearby where people can stay cheap
  • There should be a few restaurants which are able to have a large group of people eating there or two/three restaurants located near each other which can handle some smaller groups.
Remember this a checklist. If a candidate doesn't match all of these conditions, it still can be a candidate to organize an official international eurobilltracker meeting.
Still, the more requirements a candidate-organizing team has, the more credibility the candidacy has.

Candidates, place your candidacy here in this thread.
If you do so, please give us:
  • The name(s) of the organizing team;
  • The city you want to organize Winter EBTM14 in;
  • The dates that you can organize it; a detailed schedule of the event is not needed, the big lines are appreciated.
Please, keep this thread for candidates only!

Now we're almost one month after we asked you to candidate for organising the next winter-meeting.

I wonder, if some of you are thinking about this.

Remember, you don't have to have a fixed full programm ready at this moment. You can post something here earlier ;) .

And the wish of some trackers, once a candidacy is successful: We must have an early opportunity to apply for the necessary leave in our jobs. Not everybody likes that hasty friday-evening-and sunday-afternoon-travelling but might like to spend some more time at the destination. If, however, the holiday race in the companies is already run, chances might be very small that the necessary leave can be granted.

But enough with nigh-off-topic. Let us see what candidacies may come in.

To give would-be candidates the last kick: Organizing a meeting in a team of two or three people is always an option. From our experience in Frankfurt we can say that it has got its challenging moments, but when you see the end, all the fellow-trackers and things go rather well according to plans, it is a great feeling you should not miss.

Courage - dear fellowtrackers - and post your candidacies!

This topic will be closed on 13th of October (around 17:00 WEST / 18:00 CEST / 19:00 EEST), so the BoD can start to discuss about the candidates afterwards.

This will give the organisers enough time to organise.

We would like to post the candidacy of MARIBOR :flag-si: for the Winter EBT Meeting 2014.
Organizers are: Lonapo, N€mo, gergapsek. All the organizers are older than 21 and have participated in an official international Eurobilltracker meeting. English and German language won't be problem for us.

Maribor is the second largest city (about 95,000 inhabitants) in Slovenia, simultaneously it is pleasantly small and lodged in the wonderful nature of Pohorje on the one side and wine growing hills on the other, with the river Drava wending its way through it. As the city was first mentioned in the year 1254. The city boasts the Old Vine, the oldest vine in the world, and this Guinness world record holder is about 450 years old. Maribor is/ was the European Youth Capital 2013 and the European Capital Of Culture 2012.

I'm glad you're candidating.

But for those, who were also thinking about candidating (but haven't posted yet): you've still got some time to candidate.
You don't have to be affraid the rule is "First posted, first chosen": every candidate will treated the same (previous times when there were more candidates, a poll was started to choose).

LISBOA W-EBTM 2014 - candidacy

Team: LISTME WIN 14 (LISbon Team for the Meeting of EBTists, WINter 2014)
City: Lisbon, Portugal
(Lisboa, Lissabon, Lisbonne, Lisbona, Lizbona, Lisabon, Λισαβόνα, Lizbon, Lisboua, Lisbone, Łisbóna, Lisszabon, Liospóin, Լիսաբո)
Dates: March, second half (probably days 15/16)

Summary

Lovely mix of old and new. Fair weather. Plus a game.

Flexible modular program in Lisbon including activities almost round the clock. A mistery-tour-like challenge with questions about every spot visited, designed so that the winner will take a big prize (a big batch of unregistered serial numbers: you’ll be given the banknotes but you have to return them). The more program items you register and attend, the best your chances you’ll have of winning.

Touristic appeal of Lisbon and surroundings
  • Moorish neighborhoods Alfama and Mouraria, with its narrow alleys, hanging clothes and plant pots on the window sills and balconies.
  • Two iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites together: Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, in the unique Manueline style.
  • Azulejos (Iberian painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tilework) all over buildings, be they palaces or the simplest houses.
  • Distinctive yellow trams and funiculars (“elevadores”).
  • A belvedere on every hill, with outdoor cafés looking at the river Tagus.
  • Patisseries serving the already world-famous “pastéis de nata” (egg-tart pastries), along with a dozen other staple traditional pastries.
  • The best espresso outside Italy, period. Everywhere. For 65 cents or less.
  • Prices below Europe’s average.
  • A multicultural nightlife, mixing on-the-street drinking crowds with all sorts of clubs that would be hip anywhere in world and fado (traditional Lisbon song, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage), altogether in the same neighborhoods.
  • Fair weather and low chance of raining.
  • At least two spots of particular interest for EBTists (check the Schedule Outline below).
How to arrive
By plane
International Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS / LPPT) is served by all the major traditional airlines and a bunch of low cost ones. Direct connections to all capitals and a lot of major towns in the Euro Area.
The Airport is in town. Fast connections (15 to 30 minutes) by subway or bus to the center and pretty much anywhere in town.

By train
Two overnight international services available, one from Madrid and the other from Irun / Hendaye on the border between Spain and France, where you can change trains (Sud Express, TGV from Paris).

By car
Lisbon can be accessed from six main highways, including the following European Routes:
  • E01 (from Galicia and, through ferry, from Ireland)
  • E80 (from Spain, France and Italy; and, through ferry and Croatia, from Montenegro and Kosovo too)
  • E90 (from southern Spain, then through ferry from Southern Italy, then through another ferry from Greece)
(Warning: parking is not easy in Lisbon; if you plan to come by car, tell us where you’ll stay and we’ll teach you where to leave your car.)
Where to eat
There’s plenty of decent to good restaurants where 100 people will fit, be comfortable and eat well.
Prices, as referred above, are below Europe’s average.

Schedule outline
the asterisk (*) denotes spots with special interest for EBTists

Friday night
  • LX Factory (creative neighborhood) — including dinner at one of the trendy but inexpensive restaurants & Ler Devagar, one of the most amazing bookshops in Europe (we’ll ask them to carry books of special concern to EBTists)
  • Lux Frágil — Lisbon's ice-cool, must-see night club part-owned by John Malkovich
Saturday
  • Baixa — lower town area built in the 18th-century in a unique style (Pombaline)
  • * Museu do Dinheiro (Money Museum) — this museum built in an 18th-century church and around a 14th-century castle wall will open in the end of 2013
  • Alfama + Mouraria — moorish neighborhoods joining local youth and elder people, trendy spots and local trade small shops and coffee shops
  • Belém — district combining two UNESCO World Heritage sites together: Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. Also, a visit to the National Coach Museum, carrying one of the finest and largest collections of historical carriages in the world
  • “Fado no Chiado” — a 40-minute show to listen to fado and understand what it is
  • Bairro Alto + Chiado — shopping and nightclubbing district
  • Lux Frágil — again; or maybe another club ;)
Sunday
  • Sintra — UNESCO World Heritage town surrounded by Sintra Mountains and Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, with 19th-century Romantic architecture and landscapes, dotted by royal retreats, estates, castles and buildings from the 8th-9th century, in addition to many buildings completed between the 15th and 19th century, including the Castelo dos Mouros, the Pena National Palace and the Sintra National Palace.
  • * Cabo da Roca (Westernmost point of continental Europe + Westernmost EBT dot)
Notes
Note for persons with disabilities: Lots of places in Lisbon are ill-prepared for persons with disabilities. However, if anyone willing to join the meeting / tour has any impairment, the organizers will be glad to find appropriate solutions.

The organizers
lmviterbo - CTO (Chief Team Officer)
  • 51 years old
  • speaks English, Spanish, Italian and a little French, apart from Portuguese
  • has attended W-EBTM09 in Bologna+Ferrara
  • has been the main organizer of the 9th Portugal National EBTM in September 2013
  • lives in Lisbon, where he has received lots of visitors on Couchsurfing and AirBnb; has created mistery-tour scripts in Lisbon
  • was featured on a TV story about EBT (http://youtu.be/zxS6S8NPLoI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
  • is in two EBT Working Groups (Translation and City-Management)
CarlosManta - CRS (Chief Remote Strategist)
  • speaks English, Spanish and German
  • contributes to the EBT City-Management Working Group
pipocadoce - CFM (Chief Female Manager)
  • has attended S-EBTM 2011 in Barcelona
  • has organized the 7th Portugal National EBTM in September 2010
efeesse - CEC (Chief Expatriate Consultant)
  • has attended S-EBTM 2011 in Barcelona
  • lives in Brno, Czech Republic, but keeps in touch with the Portuguese forum and fellow users
Final note: although the organizers do not lack experience dealing with visitors and organizing tours, we might consider recurring to one of the several companies offering private customized travel service, since their prices are not high (We Hate Tourism, Your Friend in Lisbon, Lisbon Off the Record, Mind Map Travel, …)

Thank you for candidating.

After now, it's not possible for candidating for organising the WEBTM-2014.

Tonight the Board will meet and we'll tell you as soon as possible what the result will be.

To see where the meeting will be held, you can vote which city you prefer, we've opened a poll (you can also vote "both cities are fine for me").

You can vote in this topic.
