Post by Jackgaillard »

Here is a short guide about places we visit

Palais Rihour first built by Duke of Burgundy Philippe le Bon, during 15° century it's gothic style
Lille Belfry was built in 1932, It's the highest civil Belfry in Europe (104m)
Hospice Gantois was built in 15° century by Jean de la Gambe (le Gantois) rich merchant to treat elderly and sick people until 1995. In 2003 it becomes a five star hotel ( Hermitage Gantois ).
Eglise Saint Maurice : Construction of actual building began at the end of XIV° century and ended in the XIX° century. It' gothic and neo-gothic style
Old trading stock exchange (vieille Bourse) : was built in middle of 17° century under spanish domination. 24 little houses are sold to merchants. it recieve it's name at the inauguration of Chamber of Commerce in 1921. You can find inside an arched courtyard where and second-hand book market take place every week-ends. It's Flemish renaissance style.
Old Town district : …
Hospice comtesse : This is an hospital founded in 1237 by Countess Jeanne de Flandres. it remains in service until 1939. The present building dates from 15° to 17° century. Since 1962 it houses a museum of artworks of the region. you can feel there a 17° century flemish small couvent athmosphere.
Cathédrale Notre dame de la treille : construction began in 1854 and was built in stages from 1856 to 1975; It was completed in 1999 by installation of the facade.
Charles de Gaulle's Birthplace and museum : the house was bought in 1967 by a group of friends of the General. Now a museum, it recreates the atmosphere of a typical late 19th century home of the Northern French industrial middle class. The family keepsakes and personal objects on display (cradle, christening robe, Saint-Cyr sword, etc.) are a reminder of De Gaulle’s younger days.
