Can someone help me plz ? :) (articles about war)

Post by Tiger » Sat Mar 22, 2003 10:19 am

This friday (28th of march) I have a big exam of Dutch.
We have to write a long text about the war, and politics.

The exact topic is:
"Oorlog en vrede: zijn gewapende conflicten nog nodig in deze tijd waarin naties zich voldoende beschaafd hebben om meningsverschillen op andere manieren op te lossen?"

"War and peace: are armed conflicts still necessary in this time in which nations have civilized enough to solve disagreements in other ways?"

As a preparative task, I have to find articles about this topic, that I can use during my exam.
These texts can also be in English, or other languages, as long as I understand them :)

Can someone please post some links to articles on the net here?
I already searched a little, and I already have some articles, but the more the better :)
(half of my points for this exam are based in my sources)

Thanks in advance !

Little Spanish and Italian
Trying Finnish and Japanese :)

I can find some interesting articles... in french.

My favourites links are :
Le Monde: www.lemonde.fr
Courrier International: www.courrierinternational.com
Radio-Canada: www.radio-canada.ca

I have also read some interesting things on the site of ARTE: www.arte-tv.com

EUObserver is a good site, you could find articles on it: http://www.euobserver.com/

We could discuss this topic on the forum, if you want... :D

"War and peace: are armed conflicts still necessary in this time in which nations have civilized enough to solve disagreements in other ways?"

I think you could first ask yourself what are the other ways. In which arena do the nations talk. United Nations? Other organisations: NATO, OCDE, UE...

What are the powers of the nations in these organisations? Only freedom of speach? Action?

I think that wars are more able to occur when no organisation exists to contain problems of relations between two countries. But if a organisation is under control of one particular country, it doesn't work anymore. The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have lose their popularity since the poor countries are totally linked by these 2 organisations... (-> he debt of the Thirld World).

What is a civilized country? What are the criteria? :-)

Interesting debate...
O.

They are.
The problem is that the USA want to put their way of life, of work, of think... (of pray?) in the whole world.

France and the USA share the vision of their universal "mission". France with a laïc point of view, the ideals of the French Revolution. The USA share the same ideals (the human rights) but have another vision of the economy, the religion...
France has had no more colony for 40 years. The USA have been dominating the world economy for 60 years.

I really think that their domination is not as strong as it was in the years 1945-75. They have lost Viet Nam, they have lost their domestic security in 2001, they have now to deal with other regional power, and Europe is one of them.
I see this war also as a way not to accept the decreasing influence of their country in the world.

The European coutries are not as devided as it seams to be: look at the unanimous demonstrations in the world. The people now are afraid of the USA, and angry with their brutal and unilateral policy.

The USA, not to be criticized, have to follow the rules all the countries want to fix: Kyoto, etc...
