When I lived in Britain for a while, I frequently saw notes where there were written numbers on it. It seems to me that it is quite common there to count notes and write the sum on the last note on the heap. The same is true for Russia by the way.
Some British people also like "to embellish" the Queen in every possible way.
I recently had a 20€ note starting with "TD" which is to my mind quite unusual in Germany. There was written "220" on it. I'd bet this note started ciculating in Ireland.
