15 September 2012 - According to the news website economymagazine.bg the European Central Bank this November will present the new series of euro banknotes and they should appear in circulation in May 2013. The new banknotes will have updated and new security features.

Bloomberg.com also confirms the above and adds that the first banknotes to be put in circulation will be those of €5. It also says that "The ECB is using an image from Greek mythology to improve security on new euro banknotes. Europa, the Phoenician princess abducted by Zeus who gave the continent its name, will replace architectural images as the watermark on the new notes. Putting a face rather than a structure on the watermark may make it harder for forgers to produce fakes.

The new notes will retain these symbols and be very similar to those in circulation other than the changed watermark, the people said. The colors of the notes will be slightly different and Europa will also show as a hologram on the silver marking on the right-hand side of each bill, one of the people said. The map of Europe on the notes will reflect the enlarged European Union, according to information on the ECB’s website

31 October 2012- The Central Bank of Europe has revealed some information about the second series;

the second series banknotes will have the same colors and denominations as the first

the name of the euro will also be in Cyrillic - EBPO

a revised map of Europe including Malta and Cyprus

the initials of the European Central Bank will now be in 9 languages instead of the current 5

Image

the ECB will launch a website dedicate to the second series as part of the information campaign

05 November 2012 - euobserver.eu just reported that the European Central Bank is Thursday to present a plan for replacing current euro notes with safer ones from 2013, Hessischer Rundfunk reported Sunday. The second generation euro notes will still have values from five to €500, but motifs will change and improved security features will make forgery more difficult.

06 November 2012 - the new series of euro banknotes will be announced shortly, as you can see from the image below (it was captured from the European Central Bank website) they are preparing the website for it

8 November 2012 - Eurosystem to introduce second series of euro banknotes – the “Europa” series

The European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks (NCBs) of the Eurosystem are to introduce a second series of euro banknotes. Called the “Europa” series, it will include a portrait of Europa – a figure from Greek mythology and the origin of the name of our continent – in the watermark and the hologram. The new banknotes will be introduced gradually over several years, starting with the €5 banknote in May 2013.

The Europa series has benefited from advances in banknote technology since the first series was introduced over ten years ago. Its security features have been enhanced, which will help to make the banknotes even more secure. Three new features – the portrait watermark, portrait hologram and emerald number – have been unveiled today.

The new banknotes are an evolution. Like the first series, they will have the “ages and styles” design and the same dominant colours, but they have been modified to accommodate the enhanced security features. They will be easy to distinguish from the first series. The Europa series will have the same denominations as its predecessor, i.e. €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500, and they will be introduced in ascending order. Thus, the new €10 banknote will follow the €5.

The first series will initially circulate alongside the new banknotes, but will gradually be withdrawn and eventually cease to be legal tender. The date when this occurs will be announced well in advance. However, the banknotes of the first series will retain their value indefinitely and can be exchanged at the Eurosystem NCBs at any time.

The Europa series €5 banknote will be unveiled in full on 10 January 2013 and credit institutions will start to issue the new notes over the counter or via cash dispensers in May next year.

In order to raise public awareness of the Europa series, the ECB and the NCBs of the Eurosystem will be conducting a multi-channel information campaign across the euro area in 2013. Preparations are currently under way, supported by two agencies chosen by the ECB following a public tender.

this sounds good :D
yes that is a good news for the EBT users - i was reading that the new banknotes will have a new special coating to make them much more durable, meaning their lifetime in circulation will be much longer = more hits :D

we did a re-construction of how the new €5 banknote might look like - we used only the details that have been revealed so far

mainly;
on the right side of Europa there are some parts of stars and they fit well in the location we placed them - on the head there is the European Flag
President Signature and ECB initials are removed from the middle top
ECB in 9 languages - place on the side
EBPO added
Emerald Number (€5)
new hologram

Well, I hope that, if the new/longer copyright notice is added, the old one will go. ;) Apart from that, nice visualization! So the "emerald number" will be on that side? Just wondering, as the 50ers for example have such an effect on the other side. Ah well, we'll wait and see.

By the way, 10 January - when more details will be published - is also the opening day of an exhibition in Frankfurt about the new money: http://www.new-euro-banknotes.eu/Media- ... exhibition" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; But I suppose that it will not pay to come there from far away - most of what you can see there you will also be able to view online ...
