A back-to-back input server system?

Post by Craft »

This is probably beyond the technical, financial and other relevant possibilities, but as I know practically nothing about the server systems, I might as well suggest:

Is it possible to make a secondary server or something, so that in case of a planned or unexpected downtime on the primary EBT server there would be a place where you could still enter your notes in the meantime, with no significant breaks? When the primary server comes up again, the interim data would be fed to there from the secondary one automatically.

The secondary server wouldn't necessarily have to provide all the functionality of the main EBT server/site, like the statistics, maps, diffusion etc. Only the note input functionality would be present.

This would make it unnecessary to enter your data in an Excel file (or some other media) during the primary EBT server downtime.

(I'm not at all a heavy user of EBT, and the downtimes don't bother me at all. I just imagine that some much more devoted users probably might appreciate a system like that... )

Damnit, I came online just to say those same words :D

The emergency page could look about like this:

Code: Select all

  EBT emergency site

  email: [ ]
  password: [ ]

                        [ OK ]

Eurobilltracker is currently suffering an exceptionally massive amount of traffic, which has forced us to run site temporarily on a reduced functionality. For now you can only enter notes and register new user accounts.
We will return to normal service as soon as possible, when the problem has been corrected. That can mean something between two hours and three days, hopefully the first. For more information, please read through the messages below.

If possible, also telling more precisely what has happened and giving an approximation to when the normal site will be back on-line would be quite nice :)
