Strange new usernames on the forum.

Post by eddydevries »

I've seen quite a lot of strange user names lately (now there're Toby_Ormeston503ab and Godwin_Guernsey3cd59).

To me these look like "spam-names" (I hope, you understand what I mean).

Earlier I've seen some more, but these already have been deleted.

Does it mean that the forum is less protected? Or are the attacks heavier?

At the moment they're only strange user names, probably created by some script. Yes, those are deleted regularly. You (or any other forum user) shouldn't worry about those, it's just a minor nuisance for the forum admins.

Hehe hearing what strange names children are being given these last few years, I'm not suprised people are trying to find the strangest and most bombastic usernames for fora like this.

Numerous of ways. but the negative side of this is that how harder you make it for bots/scripts. how harder and more time consuming it will be for potential new members. My own forum was protected so hard that nobody seem to be able to sign up. and i think we don't want that either....

(we didn't have any spam since tho ;))

Actually, I don't have any problem with bots of Google, Yahoo and other searchengines indexing our forum. In contrary, I'm happy that they do, they will bring us more people to the forum and site which gives us new users, new bills and offcourse new hits

Ah, ok then. But i thought bot´s were used to get email addresses, phone numbers and other things.
I do know that there are many kinds of bot`s, probably what you mean ist that Google and Yahoo bot´s functions are different from other kinds of bot`s .

This one is quite curious, as well:

Have the google workers manually registered the bot on our forum or does it do it by itself?

It's not really a registered user, the forum simply figures out that some requests come from Google's bot (based on the user agent string, I presume).

Yes, it is: as you can see, it is a robot (you can see that it finishes with "[bot]") which means that googlebot is exploring the area, and updating the website cache for future researches of users through google.

The same applies to other bots, so, don't be surprised if one day you see yah00 or any other bot over here (usually kinda late at night)
