Cleaning Off-Topic Discussions forum

Post by alex77r »

The forum games are monopolizing the "Off-Topic Discussions" forum and it is hard to find something else there because new topics come down everytime

What about splitting them and create a dedicated forum ? I am convinced that many forumers would support me.

There's little point in keeping many of those so-called games anyway.

I completely agree, long time ago, the off-topic thread was fun to read, now only these games, I don´t even take a look at the thread anymore....

+1

When I read about this kind of discussion the first time, I wondered why people wanted to interfere in the "off-topic"-thread,... but, now I understand better...

I would favour a split

Over a year ago I made this proposition to the site development forum. I got some support but the proposition didn't pass. A copy of my post:
Poutsi wrote: Posted: 09.05.2006 / 12:21 Post subject: Proposal for a new forum area: Games & Polls

I'm sure you have noticed that Off-Topic forum is used nowadays almost only for these games:

http://forum.eurobilltracker.eu/viewtopic.php?t=1979
http://forum.eurobilltracker.eu/viewtopic.php?t=5640

...I guess there's even more of them. :?

I really liked Off-Topic forum when it started. Just look at some old topics there used to be: discussion about ongoing events and news etc. I believe these games and polls shorten significantly the life-time of threads that actually have some real conversation, because a new (factual) thread is pushed quickly to page 2 by these games and polls, where some people post many times a day. This means that people won't even notice these new threads.

So, I propose a new forum area for all these games, polls, personality tests, record times for some web games etc. My suggestion for this new area is Games & Polls.

What do you think?
Thanks alex77r for reviving the idea. :)

I don't agree with the "cleaning" of those games...!
I think that those games are a way to make a lot of interactivity among EBTrackers and to kill spare time having some fun with others.
Maybe the structure of the forum must be changed, by creating an area of those kind of off-topic discussions, but cleaning them, I totally don't agree...!

I totally agree. +1

Playing these games too I have had the possibility to know some new people around Europe.

While the title of this thread is somewhat misleading, the proposal of Alex is to split off the games into a separate forum area "Games and Polls" (or whatever name you like).

In this respect it seems to me that the posts of diogocanilho and ravestorm partially miss the point.

Restructuring the forum might be a very good idea. Several language-specific forums are more or less dominated by statistics and games now. Subforums are not yet supported by the forum software but the forthcoming phpBB v3 would let us create subforums.. Food for thought.

I agree too !

And think man a little, we're educating with these forum games too and drilling much with a google  .
On the other side I think, there are also a lot of off-topics, that we don't really need them  .

Bivol, nobody has proposed to abolish the games. So you're protesting against something which is not subject of the discussion. Besides, I cannot see any reason at all why your concern requires the use of large and coloured fonts which attract undue attention to this posting.

Gauss really doesn't like coloured text... (I have seen you react heavily to coloured texts, which is indeed the aim of colouring a text)

just kidding

So the idea, in the future is to maintain an off-topic forum and the fun of a "Games and other funy stuff"-forum...

Please, no strike ! 8)

I haven't read well the advice by alex77r before, sorry
In this case I retire what I said and I can add that this idea of creating a new separate "funny-things" section is good, in my opinion.
Sometimes I thought if that was possible because is really hard finding a different thread that it's not a game.

Sorry Gauss,

1. I'm protesting against nothing :!:

2. About large and coloured fonts 8O: ; why are then an option in the forum :?: . If you don't like them, who says that they shouldn't be used from other users, please. I'm just using them as useful options (BBcode on) of this forum  .

Best regards
