For me, it's the other way around, I had one of those from my holiday, but probably I paid with it somewhere...

I have some coins which resemble the 1 Euro coins in general look shape and size. They are identified by "10F 1989" on one side and "RF" on the other side but without the circle of stars.

Is this a valid 1Euro coin from France?

This is obviousy the 10 Francs coin from the year 1989 and is off course not valid any more.

Right, those 10F pieces could be exchanged into euro cash until February 2005. These days they are basically worthless ...

I received this coin in a shop. I noticed it early enough and so I gave the coin back! :)

I'm from the UK and shortly after the Euro was introduced I picked up a taxi at GDN in Paris. After the driver had established I was Anglais he made sure there were a couple of old franc coins in with my Euro change :D The coins were similar enough and I was sufficiently unfamiliar with the new currency for him to get away with it!

Here in England, euro coins sometimes pop up in circulation. I myself have received a Spanish 5 €-cent instead of a UK one-penny, making around 3.8 pence profit at current exchange rates.

I was fooled today. Recieving a 10-baht coin instead of 2 euros.

Hmm, nickx did not mention bimetallic but wrote "only in silver metal". The 50 lire coins were nickel pieces, I think, so that may be what he got. And the lesson we learn from that? Don't smoke, then you don't have to sit outside where the light is not as bright as inside.

Christian
The 50 Lire & 100 Lire coins from Italy,San Marino,& the Vatican City are not nickel coins. They are actually steel coins. They are attracted to a magnet.

there are different types of them, the 100 lire until 1992 and 50 lire until 1995 are steel, the 100 lire 1993-? and 50 lire 1996-? are nickel

Today I found in my mother's wallet a British Penny, probably given as a 5 Euro cent. At least it's the new 2008 design (the one with the coat of arms), which I haven't already seen, so I gained a new coin for my collection!
