Belgium used Latin language already on the ToR coin
I don't know much Latin, but I think annus is singular, so "XX ANNUS" doesn't make sense
that makes me think of that scene in "Life of Brian" where the guy forced the other guy to form a correct Latin sentence

... and it's wrong, we don't have the euro for XX years...
Joshu, a Chinese Zen master, asked a cow:
"Do you have Buddha-nature or not?"
The cow answered: "Moo."

Yep, should have been X ANNI ... and "unio" is feminine, so "monetaria" would have been right, I think. Well, the point of these designs was to give an impression what a Belgian, French, Italian, etc. piece would have looked like. In that regard, it worked fine.

While that was Frizio's own design suggestion, he also made some "localizations" of the current contest leader (#5). http://www.webalice.it/annovi.frizio/p_ ... asy15.html Hardly any text, hardly any translation troubles.

The first one in general circulation, yes. The € sign has appeared on various "regional" pieces (mostly silver and gold collector coins) so far ...

Interestingly, the winning piece ...

I can't believe it. The person on the coin looks like he's got a big hand or some sort of disease. Lame, boring, dull...it stinks!

  • Congratulations to Michal Milewski
A high-value set of euro collector coins is on its way to prizewinner Michal Milewski in Poland. His name was drawn at random from the list of the participants who voted for the winning design in the voting procedure for the commemorative coin that closed on 22 February.

Right - every EU citizen or resident had the right to vote here. Guess the primary reason why it was not limited to people in Euroland was that Slovakia is currently not a euro country but may well be a one by the time that coin is issued. So it was easier to let every EUropean vote.

At the bottom of this page http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/the ... 072_en.htm there is a (tiny) picture of the coins that Mr. Milewski won. :)
