What should the British Euro coins look like?

Post by matt.berlin » Mon Apr 22, 2002 11:17 pm

Personally, I think the Queen's head is just too boring. Has anyone got any alternative ideas?

What a really great idea to suggest the London Underground sign for the coins! I voted for it since I'm a subway fan. :P It would fit well because London had the World's first subway. But not on all the coins, please, it would be boring and make the crowd think the coins were subway tokens like the ones in NYC. I would allow the queen to be depicted on one coin only. Here's my recommendation:

2E: Shape of the British Islands
1E: Queen's head
50c: Crown Jewels
20c: Tower bridge
10c: Underground sign
5c: Ocean wave
.... : Some other landmarks, animals, or plants. Someone else must fill in this who knows the United Kingdom better than I do. :)

How about the ocean wave on a coin? Must look nice, but I never saw one on a coin.

If it was the €2 coin that had the underground sign, you could have "mind the gap" round the edge!

No doubt: famous landmarks!
This is the kind of pictures I like most on coins, but I think that at least 1 € and 2 € coins are already taken by the Queen; and I guess that there will be different coins for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (AFAIK, each country of UK mints his own version of pounds).
But I'd really enjoy to see the Beatles on British euros
Or the Linux penguin on Finnish ones

I like Pinguino's Beatles suggestion!

But it seems to be necessary for monarchies that they put their monarch's head on their currency. So we probably have to accept this.

The Italian approach for their coins looks appropriate to me. They had TV watchers decide about the Italian coins.

Nonetheless, we should not interfere to much with the British, they feel offended, when continental Europeans come up with good advice. Anyway, the British Euro coins surely will look British. I'm curious, what it finally will be.

It's not necessary... the basic idea would be this one:

Sounds cool :)

Well must say I like the penguin coin too.

But to get back on the subject of the British Euro coins. First things that come to my mind when thinking about the UK are those double-decker busses, the cabs, bowler hats, umbrella’s, the Sex Pistols and a cup of tea.

Thank you very much!!!!
A question for mts: did you think I was mocking Finland or Finnish?
Instead, I was just saying that Finland should be blessed for giving us Linus Torvalds and the Linux operating system (among other things) :)

The Finnish have the Sampo in their mythology. It is a device, which produces coins. It's a pity they didn't depict it on their Euros.

But back to the British: They have created the United States of America - more or less. That would be interesting to see on British coins 8-)

Another British Accomplishment worth to be shown on currency is the mini skirt.
