funds to be available at an ATM

Post by feferaa »

How long does it take for funds to be available at an ATM? After money (cash) has been deposited into a bank account, how long before the funds are available for withdrawal at an ATM. I've already figured out (through experience) that it is not immediate. Does it depend on the particular network? No guesses please.

In Spain:

- If you deposit at a window, the money is yours immediately. You can go to an ATM right away and take the money back.
- If you deposit at an ATM by introducing the notes in an envelope, it usually takes a couple of days.
- If you deposit at an ATM directly (no envelope, the ATM validates and counts the notes), it's immediate as in the first case.

In Malta:

There are 2 different types of ATM's

New machines accept deposits without an envelope and cash is available immediately.
Older ATM's need an envelope and the funds are deposited into the account by 14:00 of the same day if deposit is effected by 07:30, if not, they will be there on the next working day.

In Belgium:
Dexia: cash is available after a few moments (log out - wait 30 sec. - log in and cash is available)
ING: a few moments can be a few minutes
The system with envelopes have been used in the past but are very rare these days.

In Finland: The money is available in less than 0,5 seconds.

Different countries have tremendously different banking structures. In some countries it might take a week, in some countries it might take less than a second.
It just depends on how the legislation has been made.
In some countries there are also differences between banks. In Germany you get the money from with some banks almost right away but with some others (such as Norisbank) sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes in three days, depending on when you deposit the money.

So, the answer depends on where you live.

Where /do/ you live?

Germany:
the Volksbank once had different cash deposit machines in the same room, at one the cash was available instantly, at the other one it needed 1 or 2 days.
At the Sparkasse, the cash is most times immediately on the account (<1 minute), but once it was not, this was at a weekend

when I make a money transfer at the terminal from one account to another, the money is also on the account within half a minute, but only between two accounts of the same local Sparkasse
