Croatia in EU: change to 5 Europe series?

Post by ART » Sat Jun 29, 2013 12:32 am

European Central Bank in Croatian is written Europska središnja banka ( http://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europska_s ... 1nja_banka" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ): do you think the new 5 will be changed in 2014 to add the ESB acronym?
In my opinion the case is different than the old series, because the new round of enlargement took place several years after 1999/2002.

Interesting, it's odd they didn't take the Croatian acronym into account already. Are there any preceding examples (minor changes made to notes during their run)?

Don't find it odd. The new notes were designed a fairly long time before 1 July 2013. ;) Of course the Eurosystem could have waited even longer, ie. issue the first new notes next year or so. But I think it makes more sense to use those abbreviations that are in the treaty languages at the time when the notes are issued. So when the new €10 "Europa" note is issued, say in spring 2014, it will also say "ESB", I assume. Whether newly issued (2014-) fivers will be accordingly updated, I don't know ...

I don't think so. First, Europa :note-10: have already been printed (or are printed during this year), just not put into circulation yet. Second, I would guess the design of all notes is already finished, not including the abbreviation ESB. An update to the not yet issued values ( :note-20: and up) would be possible, but I would find it highly unlikely.
My NIG stats have finally disappeared. My EBTST stats are still available.

I think the only way to know is to ask directly to the ECB...

from what i understood the abbreviations are just showing the copyright owner, namely the ecb. that’s why the first series has the year 2002 on them (regardless of the productino year, only the year of the copyright) and the abbreviations of that year. and that’s also why all of the europa notes will have the year 2013 on them and the abbreviations that are (were) necessary to be listed at the time of the copyright “issue” (do you say that? however, i hope it’s clear what i mean  ).

But there is an important difference. The first series was issued in 2002 - all denominations at the very same time. The Europa series, however, is issued one (denomination) by one. So it would make sense to have "© 2013" on the :note-5: but "© 2014" on the :note-10: and so on. Of course I am just guessing or assuming here ...

i think i read somewhere that all denominations would have 2013 on them, but i can’t remember where

The question can be answered now: The new €10 notes will have the abbreviation of European Central Bank in the same languages and order as on the new €5 notes. Also, the year at the end of the copyright notice will be "2014". At least the demo notes presented in Frankfurt today suggest that.

Agreed. Well, I did get an e-mail from the ECB today. They basically say that designing and issuing banknotes is a process which takes some time, and that therefore "new languages" cannot be added that quickly. As far as I can tell, the decision to let Croatia in was not exactly a spontaneous one ;) but that's the way it is. At least they did respond pretty fast ...
