Latvia and Andorra Coins (2014)

You will know that, as from 1 January 2014, Latvia will be part of the currency union and use euro cash. On the same day, Andorra (which is not an EU member but has a monetary agreement similar to what e.g. San Marino has) will start issuing euro and cent coins too. Here are the Latvian designs:

1/2/5 cent: Lesser or small coat of arms
10/20/50 cent: Large coat of arms
1/2 euro: Latvian Maiden (as on the 5 lati coin from the late 1920s/early 30s)

The sizes are not quite accurate, but you get the idea ...

And these are the Andorran designs:

1/2/5 cent: Wildlife (Pyrenean chamois and eagle)
10/20/50 cent: Romanesque Architecture (Santa Coloma)
1 euro: Casa de la Vall (seat of the Andorran parliament)
2 euro: Andorran coat of arms

here is the reply of the bank at my request to buy the 8 Latvian Eurocoins in the official release. I hope it helps others collectors. It says to wait till the new year

"Dear Mr. xxxx,

Thank you for your recent e-mail and interest in Latvian euro coins.

We are currently working at the concept of distribution of euro coins for numismatic purposes from 1 January 2014, so at this stage I am not able to provide the requested ordering information. The new sales conditions will set the minimum value per order (number of coins and total value per order).

Following the approval of the respective regulative enactments in November, the information will be published on the Bank of Latvia’s website.

In the meantime you can register for the Bank of Latvia's coin news here: http://www.bank.lv/en/newsletter-subscription" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

There will be 800 000 starter kits issued (for a population of barely 2 million Latvians) - I doubt even half of them will be purchased by January 1st, so I guess there should be plenty of them available on ebay.

As from tomorrow (Tue 10 Dec) those euro starter kits can be had in Latvia. One bag is 10 lats and contains coins worth €14.23, the equivalent of 10 lats:
2 x 2 euro
4 x 1 euro
7 x 50 cent
8 x 20 cent
7 x 10 cent
5 x 5 cent
6 x 2 cent
6 x 1 cent

More information about where to get the kits is here: http://www.bank.lv/for-media/press-rele ... esday/8831" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Andorra is in a different situation in that they use the euro anyway. And it seems that the introduction of the Andorran euro and cent coins may take a little longer: The newspaper Diari d'Andorra just reported that "Els nous euros estaran en circulació durant el primer trimestre". http://www.diariandorra.ad/index.php?op ... Itemid=380" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (text in Catalan). In other words, the coins will come in the first quarter of 2014 ...
