1 cent German coin Berlin 2002 extremely rare, unique?

Post by Madakai » Sat Nov 22, 2014 6:53 pm

Hello,

Please we need your help. Weeks ago we found a coin 1 cent in mind condition. It's from Germany year 2002 made in Berlin. It appears a big error has been made. The material that it has been printed on seems to be the same like with the 10, 20 and 50 cent, but shinier. As you can see in the pictures. For weeks we tried to gather information about that coin, asking around, checking the internet, asking people with knowledge in this profession-but no ussefull info. Everyone seems to be surprised when we show it. We even called the bank where they first told us like the coin didn't suppose to exist and than like it does exist but it's extremely rare. Altogether we couldn't find a coin that would match the characteristics of this coin from year 2002 made in Berlin. Does it mean it's rare or even unique? Please we would be very grateful for any background of this coin.

Thank you,
M

Hi,

maybe the coin has been gold- or brass-plated to make it a "lucky coin".

This is quite common, see examples here: https://www.google.de/search?q=1+cent+v ... CAcQ_AUoAg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe some funny guy just put one of them into circulation? (though plated coins are no legal tender anymore).

Howsoever, the german page sammler.com reports a 1 Cent error coin looking "brass or gold-like" without giving a value or official source but including warning for color manipulation and the plated versions: http://www.sammler.com/mz/euro_abarten_brd_cents.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
