Common €2 Issue 2015: The Flag

Post by tabbs » Mon Apr 20, 2015 11:31 pm

This year the EU, or rather the euro area member states, will issue another common commemorative €2 coin. The theme will be the anniversary of the European Flag as a symbol of the EU. (Originally the blue flag with the circle of stars was the symbol of the Council of Europe which is not an EU body; in 1985 the European Council adopted it, along with the European Anthem.) Now you can vote for the final design: A jury selected five "finalists", and each EU citizen or resident may pick his/her favorite.

Background Info:

Vote Page:
http://www.coin-competition.eu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

While I am not really fond of this common issue (nineteen basically identical designs :roll: ), the finalists did not simply put a circle of stars in the center which would then be surrounded by the usual circle of stars, hehe. Side note: On the Vote page you can zoom in by simply moving the cursor across a design. But you can also view or download each design; just use the context menu ...

I would have loved if they allowed each of the 19 eurozone countries pick one of the five options for their own version of the 30 years flag of EU coin, as a result of which we would have up to five different designs in circulation.

Well, this way it will be less expensive for me - buy or get one piece, that's it. ;) Basically I like the idea of letting the EU citizens or residents vote; here in Germany we have never had the option to do that. (Except those common €2 issues.) I just don't think that the adoption of the flag - which had been around before the EU decided to use it too - was an event that needs to be or should be commemorated by issuing yet another common series ...

I disagree. The function of the common issues is just to celebrate something definitely important for all of Europe: sometimes you can even do it with coins with unique graphics for everyone, given the huge amount of coins different from state to state that we already have.

Although the event is not the invention of the Blue Starry but its official adoption, I think it is rather important issue: the flag is an important symbol for each country.
European soul, European pride.

Worse still, they managed to overlook the real birthday of the flag. This year it's exactly 60 years since the flag was created.

The coin is to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the European Flag as an EU symbol. So it makes sense for the EU to commemorate that; what the Council of Europe does is the CoE's business. :)

Similarly, in the very same year of 1985, the EU adopted the European Anthem (Beethoven's Ode to Joy theme) which the CoE had also adopted earlier. Maybe it would have made more sense to combine the flag and the anthem on a commemorative coin. After all, they were introduced (as EU symbols) at the same time.

While the flag is a relevant symbol, we already have the Stars of Europe on each and every circulating coin. In my opinion such joint issues should focus on achievements of the European Union, so the Treaty of Rome coin (2007) was OK to me, the creation of the euro (2009) was fine except I don't like the design ;) , and the introduction of the euro cash commem (2012) made sense to me too. In three years I would like to see a joint 25 Years Maastricht Treaty coin. But the flag adoption theme, hmm.

(Nevertheless I voted and may win the trip to Milan, hehe.)
