I hope they'll find a balanced solution for the design.

The coins from Latvia will show the Freedom Monument (or Statue of Liberty) in Riga, a Latvian maiden (like on some pre-WW2 coins), and the country's coat of arms.

No, not yet. After all, Latvia plans to join the currency union one year later than Estonia and Lithuania. According to this article --

-- production of these pieces will not start until mid-2007. So they have some more time than their neighbors.

The designer of Slovenian euro coins passed away today

Sad news; thanks for posting this. Just looked it up ...

"Graphic designer Miljenko Licul has died at the age of 62, the National Gallery said on Monday. Licul, who was awarded the Preseren Prize last year, designed the former Slovenian national currency, the tolar, and the Slovenian version of the euro coins." http://www.sta.si/en/vest.php?s=a&id=1373114 (The rest of the article is available for subscribers only.)
