EU 27 : Council Presidency , Treaty of Lisbon and more
Re: EU 27 : Council Presidency , Treaty of Lisbon and more
From the EU's "Interinstitutional Style Guide":
"The abbreviation to use = ISO code, except for Greece and the United Kingdom, for which EL and UK are recommended (instead of the ISO codes GR and GB)." http://publications.europa.eu/code/en/en-370100.htm

As far as I remember, the two-letter code for Greece within the scope of the European Community/Union was always "EL". This is obvious to someone who visits the EU Europa website and selects Greek as the language for the EU legislation to appear on screen. This particular two-letter code derives from the Greek name of Greece, which is Ελλάς (Hellas), or Ελλάδα (Hellada), in modern Greek; note that the initial "H" is simply an aspiration mark (spiritus asper).WinstonSmith wrote:Since when has "EL" become the two-letter combination for Greece? It has always been "GR"...
Wikipedia also uses EL as the code for the Greek language.

Keep in mind though that, as in Wikipedia, the different versions of the europa.eu website are language related, not country related. For example, there is no special version for Austria - the "de" (German) language tag covers both Austria and Germany. Similarly there is one Greek version which covers Greece and the Republic of Cyprus ...

I think it's quite strange that we use HU for Hungary only because of its latin name: if it is called Magyarország from inhabitants, I think it was more correct to use something like MA, MG, MZ or similar

Well, if the "H" (on license plates) or "HU" (as the ISO code) is what the Hungarians want to use ... Similarly, Austria has the "A" and "AT" even though the country name in its own language is Österreich. And Finland uses the Swedish "FIN" or "FI" - ah well, unlike Latin or English, Swedish does at least have some kind of official language status in Finland.

But this doesn't regard the Treaty of Lisbon and the EU in general

As up to now Germany joined that list. The ratification has been stopped by the Federal Constitutional Court while the treaty of Lisbon itself has been granted.
