New signature on banknotes: 2019/20

Post by lmviterbo »

Now that the next ECB president is being talked about ⁽¹⁾, I wonder when will the new Europa notes start being issued with this new signature.

Does anyone remember when notes with JCT and MD signatures showed up for the first time? Is it expectable to have new signatures already in the last months of 2019?

¹ There is now a good chance that Mario Draghi will be succeeded by Jens Weidmann in October 2019. Check for example the latest articles on the subject on Reuters or Handelsblatt.

Draghi's tenure began on 1 November 2011. First sightings of his sig. in March of 2012 (in tenners and above denoms.):

Draghi was interesting because the Europa fiver was already scheduled to be introduced when he took office. The decision was made not to include his signature in the remaining production of 2002 fivers. I think it's a pity, it would have been quite a rare note. :)

Thanks, excellent information. So I guess we should expect notes with the new signature to start circulation around March or April 2020.

On the other hand, the only Trichet Europa fiver that was put in circulation is the most rare of all the plate combinations.

Now here's a signature that might be on the Europa notes from 2020:

I know it looks like Jim Carmen but, believe me, it's Jens Weidmann.

Mind you that Mario Draghi's signature used to be a big "Mario" and a much smaller "draghi" (here, linked on the EBT Italian forum months before the signed notes appeared), before he decided to sign MDraghi on the euro banknotes. So, even if Jens Weidmann is confirmed as the new president, the signature on the notes might differ from this one.

I keep forgetting to post something about this, many of you probably heard some news. It was a lukewarm summer for Herr Weidmann...

That article points to Klaas Knot and Ardo Hansson as the most likely candidates at the moment. Yet, a slightly more recent article on Bloomberg — Who Will Be the Next ECB President?, updated every month — points in the almost opposite direction. According to Bloomberg News, Erkki Liikanen, François Villeroy de Galhau and Philip Lane are now the most likely successors to Draghi. According to the Financial Times, though, the frontrunner is now Benoît Cœuré… (Field for ECB top job widens after Weidmann setback)

If the next ECB President is Erkki Liikanen, as it appears to be the more likely case at the moment, then he might have to draw a better signature for the banknotes, just like Mario Draghi has done when he was appointed. Here's Liikanen's signature from a year ago, on the Bank of Finland Annual Report 2017 (pdf here):

Well, maybe. There's always the case of Mr. Duisenberg's, which was as scribbly as they get haha. Of course, he was the first, maybe they didn't worry about such things back then.

Six months to go, and Monsieur de Galhau has taken the lead at the Bloomberg panel!

This is how he signs:

Herr Weidmann has edged forward once again. But the hopes of any of these gentlemen could be foiled by the pressing issue of equality:

It seems that the new signature will likely be Lagarde.
