at 1:18 a new NZ note.

Maybe they are a sort of "test notes", just like the Z002/ZA s.
There's no reason to start an alphanumeric progressive sequence (the serial number) with the last lettera instead of the first one.
I think the "real" N/N and X/X notes will start with NA and XA.

Another W/W has surfaced on the news (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk). The shortcode is not readable. Already reported as a public serial.

The new Portuguese are out. M002C1, MA017

So after and , it is exciting to know that there's a third country issuing "mainly for domestic release" as it looks like. Interesting when it comes to the fact that all three countries are on the corners of Europe. On the very rare occasion I find a T/T here in Athens, I know that it came here from Ireland one way or another, and I think the same applies to our Y/Y when they are discovered elsewhere in Europe. This is the whole statistical magic of each state issuing its own banknotes. So Portugal, welcome to the club, and try to keep those released in Portugal only, and let's see how far they will go. As far as I know, and judging by my travels within Greece and by checking the table here, Y/Y are fairly rare even outside Athens, as they are mainly been released from banks here. (All Attica/Metropolitan Athens post codes begin with 1). I am not very sure if the same applies to Ireland too.

So there are 8 letters confirmed so far for the new Europa :
M/M, N/N, R/R, S/S, U/U, V/V, W/W, X/X

Alright.. Assuming the Francophone people finish the translation I requested in time, I may end up making these changes after all.

So, which one of you has the best crystal ball? Which letters should be supported on EBT on the morning of 25th November? I would think all 8 of those.

One troubling issue is that some of those pictures have shown non-[A-F] letters in the 2nd position of the serial number. Do you have any guidance for me regarding that? Should we accept non-[A-F] letters in the 2nd position for a) none of the printers, b) all of the printers or c) a subset of those (which ones)? What would be the letter range in those cases? A-Z or something else? Will some printers have a different range than the others?

As to the first letter, there are pictures of notes with all those eight and none other. I guess that this, combined with the documental proof found by LucasFr, makes it reasonable enough to assume they are printed and will be issued now (or soon).

As to the second letter, the only non-[A-F] one seen was Z (in NZ and XZ). As suggested by others, these being test notes is more likely than not. Although, after having seen the production serial number screens and sheets on the production videos, I can't figure out any advantage on reprogramming the system specifically to produce test letters, I agree that, after all, the test notes theory is reasonable, and would not allow them for now.

EDIT: I had mistyped "NZ and XZ" as "NZ and SZ". SZ was never seen as far as I know. Clearing this up years later just because this and another post I mentioned SZ keep being quoted.

Do you think that the Croation abbreviation ESB will only show up on the 3rd series of euro banknotes? It seems that they don't want to change the original initials of the European Central Bank from the new banknote.

I guess the Europa had its design completed before July 2013 (Croatia officially joining EU). The new Europa is likely completely designed and maybe in production as of now. I haven't seen any pictures of it though. Unless there's someone with inside information, I believe we will have to wait until we see the first images, and then we'll know whether the large denominations will or won't have "ESB" on them.

Speaking of the new , I was wondering the other day if it will come out in 2016, or if it will spill over to 2017. So far, we've had introduction dates in May, September, and November. Next year, November again? December? Or sometime before that (less than a year from now)?
