Re: Dots in maps
Actually Ylitornio is little bit more to west than Tornio or Pello. You can check from a real map if you want. (I've lived in Ylitornio for almost 20 years).avij wrote:Hm, I've now moved all the dots very slightly to the east. I noticed that there are two dots which both have Tornio zip codes in them. Does one line split Tornio?

I don't understand, what exactly are these red dots? There aren't any notes entered in the squares where these dots are in. Have you made these by entering coordinates to the map image, just like we made the map?lmviterbo wrote:While you were doing that marvelous work, I've done this, copying the style of your previous map:
I checked carefully for all borders and I am almost certain that nothing is missing or wrong now, except for those 2 red dots, which should be part of the borders, otherwise notes on Cabo da Roca or Berlengas will fall on the ocean.
I think the squares are still a bit misplaced, look hereavij wrote:Hm, I've now moved all the dots very slightly to the east. my map
red dot
green dot
So the squares are always a bit too far to the west
Could you move the squares 1 pixel to the right so they match with the small dots/green lines/map?
The square Lissabon is in should be this, that is also more east than the square on the map
so these dots lmviterbo made should make new squares where no notes have been entered yet...?
This is a special case of the (let's call it) "minor island inaccuracy" which was discussed and decided upon here for the Italian island Lampedusa which is not shown on the map.lmviterbo wrote:I checked carefully for all borders and I am almost certain that nothing is missing or wrong now, except for those 2 red dots, which should be part of the borders, otherwise notes on Cabo da Roca or Berlengas will fall on the ocean.
It's a catch-2 situation: Either the dot (which marks a bill location) in on that pixel - then the inaccuracy is not visible anyway because the dot would hide the adjusted borer anyway.
Or the dot isn't there, then it is nearly impossible to spot the inaccuracy without greatly zooming into the map. This is done on very occasions and therefore considered not an issue - until maybe, one day, zoomable maps are implemented

To answer your question: yes, it may be possible.Yippo wrote:I noticed that there are two dots which both have Tornio zip codes in them. Does one line split Tornio?
Sure, unless there are lots of people who feel their dots are already too far to the east? Let me know if some of you object to this proposal.androl wrote:Could you move the squares 1 pixel to the right so they match with the small dots/green lines/map?

I entered the coordinates to the EBT's location data, in spite of not having any notes for those. So it's the same principle though not the exact same procedure that you used to redraw the map.androl wrote:I don't understand, what exactly are these red dots? In fact, Cabo da Roca is on the shore, west of Peniche. It's the most Western point on the European continent.Gauss wrote:This is a special case of the (let's call it) "minor island inaccuracy" which was discussed and decided upon here for the Italian island Lampedusa which is not shown on the map.lmviterbo wrote:I am almost certain that nothing is missing or wrong now, except for those 2 red dots, which should be part of the borders, otherwise notes on Cabo da Roca or Berlengas will fall on the ocean.
As to Berlengas, it is a very small archipelago, the whole archipelago encompassing an area about the same size of Lampedusa alone. The biggest island (and the only one where notes could be registered, anyway, since it's where restaurants, rooms to rent, a camping site and a tourism office are) is 2,5 km² only. This is slghtly larger than a pixel, while Lampedusa alone would be a few pixels apart, let alone the whole Peaelagian Islands. The only reason I thought this dot could be added to the map is that it is so near the shore that it would appear like an extension of the border and not some gray pixel(s) on the ocean. In fact, I even displaced the dot a pixel further north, so that the design looks better.
Please do not see this as critiques. The map is VERY good as it is, and if adding those 2 dots is more than a 10-minute task, just disregard this.
Sorry, I didn't get that. Could you please clarify?androl wrote:The square Lissabon is in should be this, that is also more east than the square on the mapavij wrote:Hm, I've now moved all the dots very slightly to the east. As mentioned about Torino, Paris is also split between two dots now, depending on the arrondissement. I now live at the "crossroads" of four dots, which certainly makes for a colorful new map
but there is some geographical distortion that seems to defy logic (perhaps it was always that way, and only is more noticeable now). One example I will point out after looking at the dot map that avij kindly gave us access to is one that I think something needs to be done about given the amount of traffic the place gets...Roissy-en-France (Roissy for short, home of CDG airport). Entered some ways it correctly appears in the dot north of Paris, whereas 95700 Roissy (zip code is correct) bizarrely puts it two dots lower, south of Paris
... it would be pretty funky to get a hit at the same airport with a 50 km distance involved
Otherwise, the new pixel resolution is quite good!

I understand your concern, but I'm afraid that is precisely the kind of comment that might get the dots map offline. To correct those errors is that task of a small task-force involved in coordinates mapping of towns and zipcodes.j3paris wrote:Roissy-en-France (Roissy for short, home of CDG airport). Please read what avij wrote when he gave us that wonderful dots map:

Yeah my Paris dots also changed. (I used to live in Paris when I started tracking euros in 2002). But I think there always were two dots above each other for Paris (with the border at the height of the 11th arrondissement). Now I can even find three dots, one including 1st to 15th and 20th arrondissement, one dot to the left with the 16th arrondissement, and one dot above with 17th to 19th arrondissement.
That does make sense geographically (I am not complaining Imviterbo
) but still funny. The arc de triomphe e.g. is the "border stone" between the 8th, 17th and 16th arrondissement. If you get three bills at its entrance you can now gain three new dots. That should make it a must for every eurobilltracker visiting Paris!

I was in full knowledge of avij's statement when I posted; my comments were by no means complaints, just an observation...for information. I thought Roissy should be mentioned because I know a heck of a lot of EBT'ers pass through there. That's all... OK?lmviterbo wrote:I understand your concern, but I'm afraid that is precisely the kind of comment that might get the dots map offline. Indeed, the data regarding 95700 Roissy-en-France in the coordinate-database was not consistent. This should be fixed now.lmviterbo wrote:I understand your concern, but I'm afraid that is precisely the kind of comment that might get the dots map offline. The dots map is indeed not meant for searching actively such flaws in the coordinate-database - and the server load involved is just one of them - in particular, mismatches between country, city and zip code. The "task force" can address only the two following problems:
A clearly identifiable place (city name, country, and zip code must match) is plotted in the wrong place,
or spelling variants of the same, clearly identifiable place are plotted at different locations.
Observations of such inconsistencies (and only such!) are gratefully received, preferrably at contact@eurobilltracker. Reports of any other kind of mismatch spotted on that dots map, are useless and therefore not desired. Hope this clarifies the situation.
Thank you, Gauss. My intention was far from bitching, just pointing out a high-traffic area where I'm sure many an EBT'er will pass through and where there was some ambiguity. Now back to turning my attention toward filling in the "blanks" on the map of France
...and hopefully getting new French users to do so too! (tough work but it's worth it!)
Keep up the good work

if you compare the red square dot on this map with the calculated coordinated on this map and zoom the images or look very exactly at them, you can see that the red square dot is still 1 pixel too far left.lmviterbo wrote:Sorry, I didn't get that. (or these two: 1 2)
The two islands you added are west of my calculated line, so if someone enters a note with coordinates of these islands, there will be a new square dot left of the red one.
