FLAG problem

Post by MARIUS-FFB »

The following examples show the problem with the display of flag symbols in Forum and/or Eurobilltracker Website

Austria flag
:flag-at: (works as "smiley")
https://en.eurobilltracker.com/img/flags/Austria.gif (works NOT with the webaddress of Austria flag)

Finland flag
:flag-fi: (works as "smiley")
https://en.eurobilltracker.com/img/flags/Finland.gif (works NOT with the webaddress of Finland flag)

San Marino flag
:flag-sm: (works as "smiley")
https://en.eurobilltracker.com/img/flags/San Marino.gif (works NOT with the webaddress of San Marino flag)

I want to display an USA- flag on my EBT- profile but there are no "US-flag smileys".
The display of the flag does NOT work with the webaddress of the US-flag.
If I directly insert this flagsymbol address into the address field of the browser, the flag will be displayed.
But if I use this address in the Forum and/or Eurobilltracker Website, the flag will not appear.
See:

NO, I don't want to use external sources for the flag.
And NO, "your" US flag has rounded corners - this is not the correct display of the flag.
The EBT- webpage already has all the flags of the world -> see
https://en.eurobilltracker.com/rankings/?b=countries

Why it is not possible to just take one of these?

The profile supports a limited set of HTML elements. <img> is intentionally not supported, because an <img> element pointing to some other website than EBT could be used for malicious purposes. There is currently no mechanism to allow <img> elements only if the src points to EBT, and I would not hold my breath waiting for that kind of mechanism to emerge.

Hello avij,

yes, I already assumed the limitation of HTML coding.

YES, YES, YES!
I want to point to EBT - to the concerning US- flag with the URL on the EBT server:

Code: Select all

https://en.eurobilltracker.com/img/flags/UnitedStates.gif
In the Forum here, it is working, see --> Image
On my profile this does not work even though the src points to EBT.

That's why I wanted to point out:
The solution are SMILEYS
These smileys work very good on the profile.
But there's only a little problem: These smileys are limited and there is no "US- flag smiley" which I could use.

My request: Please extend the smilies chart with more countries flags!

The short code for the various countries is specified with the ISO 3166-2 code list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2

So the smiley for the US- flag should be :flag-us:

Greetings - Marius

Sorry LITO, I had misunderstood your question in the French-speaking forum. The explanation I gave you does work for the forum (like this Image for Mexico) — but I think MARIUS-FFB is asking about displaying them in his EBT profile, which is not possible, as avij confirmed.

But this is anyway possible to display the flags in the EBT profile:
When the flags are to be transferred into a smiley symbol.

Look at my profile: There is a Brazil flag after the Ireland flag.
Someone created especially for me a Brazil- smiley and so I could display this flag on my EBT profile.
Now I have a similar problem with the US flag and the Thailand flag...

KLAPOTEC put my request into practice and transferred all the flags of the world into smileys.
AVIJ did the concerning webpage update on 17.04.2025 and now everybody can display
country flags (smileys) on their EBT profile page.
In the attachment there is a list of the implemented country flags with the smiley code according ISO-3166-1.
Now my US and Thailand flags are correct displayed and I'm happy about this :D

Fantastic!

I was preparing a post with all those flags and codes, but I had to stop when I saw that Anguilla had the UK flag. It seems that all British overseas territories have the same problem, as well as part of the French overseas territories (at least French Guiana got its own flag). Is this on purpose?

Hello Miguel (Imviterbo)

I know that Anguilla and several other territories have another flag.
Example Anguilla:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anguilla
I really wanted to have displayed the correct flag but unfortunately EBT
does not have the flag which could be transferred into a smiley.
see -> https://en.eurobilltracker.com/profile/?region=15998

So KLAPOTEC memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2312 took my list and transformed
all the country flags into smileys. After then AVIJ implemented the coding into the webpage.
I think, when someone want to correct all the "incorrect" flags,
he/ she has to generate the correct flag for the concerning region / territory.
Than this has to be uploaded into the main EBT page (country folder).
Not till then Klapotec may transform these new flag symbols into smileys and Avij afterwards implements this into the webpage.

But that would be a huge amount of work - first one to find all the missing / wrong flags of the regions / territories.
The other problem: Where should be the boundary between countries and territories / counties and isles?
Like the british:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Virgin_Islands
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayman_Islands
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montserrat

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_I ... _Territory
and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland

and what about ?

flags-as-smilies (and flags for individual notes and hits) can only be implemented for countries, i.e. what EBT sees as countries. to implement all ISO 3166 territories would mean quite a big change to the database, not just the data, but also the structure. we do have more immediate problems that noone has the time or inclination to implement solutions for...

Thanks for the clarification, klapotec. (And for the implementation, of course.)

I salute everyone involved in this new feature, from its proposition to its implementation.
