Comparing Eurobilltracking with...

Post by emmem »

In this post avij wrote he usually compares note tracking to bird ringing.

I often compare Eurobilltracking with collecting stamps. Especially when someone starts mocking about my Eurobilltracking, I try to use the comparison with stamps. It often leads to discussions about the fact that with Eurobilltracking you do not really collect anything.

So now I am wondering about better examples to compare Eurobilltracking with. I think it might help in promoting EBT.

I also wouldn't do it... I think it's an hobby exclusively British, at least there's no translation in Portuguese, and I never heard about anyone here that trainspotted...

I only know about this hobby because of the book and movie, great movie!

Good film ... a kind of realism we never see in Hollywood stuff
But the scene with the baby dying of hunger because the lads just blacked out for a day or two was over the edge for me ...

I have the same with Pulp Fiction (over the edge)
I never had it with "A True Romance" or "Natural Born Killers" strange, because these were extremely violent ...

Sometimes a film can touch you ...
(Like Private Ryan landing in Normandië .... Brrr)
Time is on our side ...

Yea, but there's a fundamental difference that when you're collecting stamps: you keep the stamps you receive, you don't put them back in circulation. That's why I prefer the bird ringing example, as the bird gets freed after being captured.
Money makes the world go round. We track how the money goes round the world.

Maybe you can compare it to Fishing ?
You fish, catch a fish, you take a picture, mesure it, etc, and then (at least in the fishingpond here) you throw it back into the water.

I never did it, because it seems extremely boring! :)

EBT isn't just inserting serial numbers...
This forum is for me what really counts. There's a real 'community' attached on the EBT-site, and that's what keeps me interested!

Looks like a good comparing example to me. But how do you know if you catch the same fish again?

In fact this is often the reason why collecting stamps is perceived as a real collecting hobby, since you collect something tangible, something you can hold in your hands. With EBT you only collect data. With bird ringing you only collect data too.

A second thing about collecting stamps is that some stamps are more valuable than others. At first I almost started thinking this was not the case with EBT. But when I think about it, tracking a 100 Euro note has a higher value than tracking a 20 Euro note. In my case the most valuable notes to get are the Finnish ones. Because up till now I only have 1 of those entered.

It occurred to me today that EBT can also be a kind of dairy.

If you enter comments you can see afterwards some things you did, where you have been...

Planespotting. There are bigger chances to see new types of airplanes or airplanes with new paintings at an airport than to see varieties of trains at a railroad track. Here in Geilenkirchen we have the worst airfield for spotters - only one type, AWACS E-3A.

I think EBT is also like preparing any kind of lists. There are people who enjoy listing.

Also stargazing has some tracking aspects. There are objects you can see every night and there are things you only can see at certain seasons and some objects like asteroids or periodical comets come back after a long time.

But I never would compare it with a dairy, because I never got milk out of a bill.
