I don't think that the Maltese referendum will decide about the EU membership. According to my source (ZDF - German TV), we can expect that they bring the elections for parliament forward. So they would vote 6 weeks after the referendum and it is possible that they vote for EU today and for Labour (against EU) then. Or they vote against EU today and later for the Nationalist party (pro Europe). The situation may become more confusing.

I don't understand the link between the referendum and coming elections...

The referendum does not prescribe what the Maltese government has to do. It only reveals what the people think today. If they have the elections shortly after the referendum, it could come to the situation that the people vote first for EU and later for a government that decides to stay out, or vice versa.

Curious!
The referendum should have been scheduled after the elections!

"Counting will begin on Sunday morning and projected results are expected from around midday, while the official result is expected on Sunday evening. " in BBC

this seems to be the most impredictable referendum.. it's the only poll here at EBT forum, that doesn't give a clear yes victory....

Yeah, the final results are in:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2833889.stm
"The final results showed that 53.6% supported the accession, while 46.4% voted against."

Now let's hope that they won't vote for their labour party in the upcoming election.

It's great that Malta voted yes. The first one is always important, now they have set an example for the other countries.

Yes, Antti. I remember how it was in 1994:
The accession polls in Austria, Finland, Sweden and Norway took place in this order - because surveys showed this corresponded to the likelyhood of a positive result. Indeed, Austria had the highest approval rate for the accession and Norway the lowest (well, in fact Norway voted against accession).

Just to mention that for the younger of us.

Olivier
well, that I can imagine:

"France and Germany are fighting against their loss of influence. now with the enlargement a New Europe arises, and the Old one get's less importance.. "

i guess it's something like this
