Notes received at sea

Post by mirandolina »

Has anyone any idea how I should register a note I received on the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam?
It would be nice to have a note in Britain, but maybe it never landed! I have now spent it somewhere between Holland and Germany, so I would like a hit eventually... :)

Notes you get on board a train/plane/ship etc. have to be entered in the last station where the ship/train/... stopped.

In your case that will probably be Newcastle. If the boat made a short stop somewhere that last port should be entered as location.

For example:
Last week on my way home after the meeting in Helsinki I took the ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm. I got notes from this journey and I entered them as Helsinki. However a nightstop was made in Maarianhamina (Mariehamn) where people and cars were loaded/unloaded.
The note that I got on the ship after this stop I entered as Maarianhamina.

I think that's the best way to do it yes.

I think you can register your note in New Castle because the ferry started overthere, so everyone has been in New Castle. :D :D

You should also add a comment like "got on a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam". This an interessting information for these notes.

The last place the ship stopped was Ijmuiden, where the Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry arrives. In that case I should register the note there. Can anyone in Holland give me the postcode for Ijmuiden? Thanks..... :)

1976 IJmuiden or 1975 IJmuiden according to some searching with Google. Don't forget the stupid Dutch spelling rule, it must be "IJmuiden" because "IJ" is pronounced as a single letter. But it doesn't matter, since EBT capitalizes only the first letter of a place name.

But it you ask me, IJmuiden isn't the only place possible where you can enter your note. It's just a general rule to enter it to the last stop the ferry, train, bus, or plane made.

Right, I've registered the note at IJmuiden. Now get out there and find it, I spent it at a petrol station near Arnhem! It's only a little one.... :note-5: but sometimes they travel more than the others....

Hmm, in my opinion you received the note on board so the last port the note has been before you is Newcastle.

You took it to IJmuiden and although the note has been there, I think the most correct location would be Newcastle. Also gives a nice dot on your Europemap.

But it is your note and you should enter it as you think is best.

I do this very differently than apparently the most of you. Usually I put the place from where the trip has started or where the notes have propably come from. For example I have been in a ferry from Turku (Finland) to Stockholm (Sweden) several times but I still don't think that I have notes from Sweden.

You may consider me an "expert" in this case. I live on an island for 40 years now.
I always register my notes with the harbor of departure (Terschelling or Harlingen). It seemed most logical when I got my first on-board note.

For such reasons I never spend notes higher than 5 Euro on planes, ferries or trains. Less problems this way. But it is true. Generally, the place of the last stop is taken. And please seize the suggestion and make use of the comment field.

You wouldn't believe how bloody battles we've had about this in the Finnish forum.

The best thing to do is to listen to your heart. As long as you are able to sleep your nights after entering the note, you've done just what should be done.

This is what I do:
In a ferry I enter the last important place the ferry has visited. For example on a Helsinki-Kapellskär-Stockholm ferry I'd enter the note as gotten from Helsinki even if I had gotten it after Kapellskär, because the Kapellskär stop is made only because of EU legislation, not because some passengers would use the harbour there.

In a train I look out from the window and later locate myself from a map as exactly as possible. So, if I'm in a non-stop train from Narvik to Napoli and get a note while the train is speeding trough Copenhagen, I enter the note as gotten from Copenhagen, because that way the note's location is shown most exactly. In my opinion.
Some people also enter their Helsinki-Stockholm notes to the nearest place that has a postal code. That has produced almost all of the note entries in Utö, an island in middle of the Baltic Sea :D

In airplane I enter the place from where I guess the moeny is from.

In a car I enter the exact place.

My basic principles are:
1) The most important thing is getting the most honest possible dot on the map. I must be sure that the note has been where I say it has been.

2) It doesn't matter whether I get the note in a moving vehicle or while standing in some house. Some say the note isn't really in circulation in the place where the vehicle is, if the vehicle is only driving through the place, without its passengers really stopping there for one second. However, if I was in a car going from Narvik to Napoli and got a note from my friend in the same car while stopping in Copenhagen, I wouldn't really say the note's been in circulation in Copenhagen any more only because the transaction didn't happen in a moving vehicle. And still, I'd find it a bit odd entering a note gotten while standing in Copenhagen as gotten from some other place in the universe. And so, for logic's sake, I enter also the train notes as gotten from where the train has been at that specific moment.

3) Whatever you choose, always write the exact information in a comment. So, just enter the notes as gotten from UK, NL or from some island in the sea. Who cares, as long as the note entries have comments such as "From a place in middle of the English canal in a ferry going from Fooham to IJgroebar."
Or, to be honest, someone will care. But that will happen no matter what you do, because everyone seems to have different opinions about this. And since someone always whines, you don't really have to care of them :)
