Diplomatic protection...

Post by Olivier »

I just wonder... Imagine that you are in danger in a country far from home... which ambassy (except the one from your country) would you choose to feel safe and get some help to come back home?

I have asked this question to my canadian friends... some told me Great Britain (because they are member of the Commonwealth and the Queen is their head of state), other told me the USA...

I thought they would say France, but no. :o

What about you?

Personnaly, I would choose
- any embassy of a member of the European Union.
- the canadian embassy...

depending on the country I would be.. I would try to reach an EU ambassy or some other from a portuguese language country..

if none of that would be available, countries like Australia, Canada, or South American countries would be my next choice...

in North Korea I would try China

I'd first try Sweden probably, it's close to Finland and seems solid and safe, I would also know the language(but then, diplomats know several languages anyway) and then any other EU country. Or even US would do if I really needed it.

If the German embassy is not available I would try to contact German people living abroad (e.g. a physician) or institutions like Goethe Institute for advice what I should do next. Otherwise I would try EU embassies like Austria, UK (because of the languages), Denmark (because that's close to my home). Maybe I would try one after another until I get the help I need :)

This question shows you which are the countries you feel closer than others... :)

Any EU embassy, but I'd try Swedish embassy first.

I'd probably walk to the nearest embassy of any EU country.

I share your choice : and I want to point out that I would prefer the Luxemburgian embassy above any other...

Maybe the British or the Spanish Embassy.

Definitely an Embassy of the EU.

Swedish, Norwegian or Danish, then perhaps German or any other EU country. If I was really desperate I could try the Russian embassy, as I think I could make myself understood in Russian..
