Have you already heared about this site? I always regret it that it isn't in English. On this site we can see how the coins are spread all over Europe. But as you can see most of the users come from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. I want more users from all over Europe. That's why I want to help a little bit.

If you go to the site you can see there in the left corner "metingen invoeren". Here you can insert the coins you have in your possession now. After you clicked on that you come at a page with the title: Munten uit welke landen gaan er ingevoerd worden? Here you can say from which country you have coins in your possession. The countries are in this order:

Belgium
Germany
Finland
France
Greece
Ireland
Italy
Luxembourg
Monaco
the Netherlands
Austria
Portugal
San Marino
Spain
Vatican

After you filled in from which country you have coins you can click on the button "verder". (If you don't know very well Dutch please write the countrynames from which you have coins somewhere else for the next step) After that you come at a page where you can fill in how many coins of each value you have per country. When you have done that you need to fill in "Gegevens meter". Next to "naam" you write your name. Behind "plaats" you can fill in the place where you are or where you found them. You can fill in some comments after "uitleg".
At the end push the button "verder" which means next. Than you come at the control page. If you see an error you can push the button "terug". If you don't see one you need to push the button "verder".

Than you see the end result.

I hope we can see more Finnish, Irish and Greek users on this site from now on. Others are also welcome.

Hm, I don't see the point to enter my eurocoins....They don't have a registrationnumber, like banknotes
Jelle zonder internet.

That is right, but as ka-8 wrote, the purpose of such a "diffusion" project is a slightly different one: We do know the production figures of the euro and cent coins, country by country. So it is fairly easy to say that Country X has a share of so and so many percent of the total production, Country Y makes so and so many, etc. Now the question is, can these proportions actually be found in circulation, in each euro country?

The obvious answer at this stage is No. :) In the Netherlands most coins found in circulation are Dutch, in Belgium the lion share is Belgian, and so on. It is a little different in small countries. But to which degree do the coins get "mixed"? That is what eurodiffusie is about.

Here is another project, a study carried out by a mathematician in Freiberg, Saxony: http://www.euro.tu-freiberg.de/
This page from the project site lists the share (in %) that non-German 1 euro coins have in Germany:
http://www.mathe.tu-freiberg.de/math/in ... oderg.html

Sure, with coins you will never get a "hit" like you can here. But the results are nevertheless interesting from a statistical point of view. The breakdown per denomination, for example, shows quite nicely that high value coins tend to "travel" while low value pieces tend to "stay home".

My only problem is time constraints; I spend too much time on coins and currency anyway. But the idea behind "eurodiffusie" is neat!

Well, some people entered coins after I started this topic. Yesterday, the results page with the title "laatste z dagen" (last 7 days) was empty for Finland, Ireland and Austria. If these people entered coins after they read this topic, thank you. And I hope you will come back to that site.

It seems to me there are still a lot of Finnish and Irish coins in their country. Is it because of the water between these countries and the other countries of the €-zone? I must say I don't get that much Finnish and Irish coins. Here we get a lot of German, Dutch and French. They throw more and more Belgian ones out of my wallet.

Yeah, I always notice I see a lot more foreign coins in my change when I'm abroad. Here I'd say over 75% of the coins I receive are Irish.
I really like the idea of the site, but the fact that it's only in Dutch is a big deterrant. If this site truly wanted to be European they should offer it in (at least) English, if not also French and German. As it is, it's a useful site for seeing the diffusion of coins in Holland and Belgium...
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

It's like EBT, the website is also runned by volunteers but only by a few people, not a bigger group.
BTW, it's a great way to improve your Dutch  .

We can read now in the reactions on the Eurodiffusie site that the site is going to become bilingual somewhere this year. He says it is on his todo-list. :D

It's very likely because of geographical location of Netherlands and Ireland. The Netherlands are really in the middle of European crossroads (e.g. routes to/from to the major European harbours - Antwerpen and Europoort Rotterdam), the Ireland is on the boundaries of the EU, and thus maybe the difussion is less intensive.
I'm interested in seeing how many UK Euros I'll see in my change once they switch over. Last year Ireland had more than 5 million visitors (a million more than our population). It is estamated that up to a third of those came from the UK.

And once Switzerland, the US and China switch over, life will be even easier. :D But by that time "cash" will probably be a thing of the past ...
