Used notes from an ATM
Today a weird thing happened to me. I drew 100e as 20e notes from the wall. They had all been in circulation. One was an X (Germany) note, another one was V (Spain) note. The other ones were L (Finland) notes. The foreign notes were quite fine, although I could clearly see they were used ones. The Finnish notes were in a bit worse condition. One was so wrinkled that it's a real surprise it ever got through the bank.
How often do you get used notes from an ATM?
BTW, my teacher told that when he was working in the Finnish NCB and was putting notes into different piles (good shape, average shape, shredding), they shredded all 10mk (1,7e) notes without even checking their condition. Considering that it's quite impressing that a badly wrinkled note gets through..

I've heard that ATMs check the weight of the notes they're going to give to the ATM users, and if the weight doesn't match the calculated weight, those notes are discarded (put into some special bin inside the ATM) after which the ATM will try to get the right number of notes again. I'm not sure if they really do work like this, but I'd say that this would be possible.Donald wrote:Sometimes the notes have 3 turned-down corners. It reveals that the ATMs must be quite advanced, for they don't make errors.
We have a nice machine at work for counting the notes: I can put a stack of about 60-70 notes (of the same value) on the scale and it'll tell me that the stack contains 68 notes, 1360€. This all happens very quickly and very accurately. This speeds up the money counting process significantly and so I have more time to enter notes into EBT
I have received some used notes from ATMs, but they have been in a good condition nevertheless. I haven't received any awful-looking notes from ATMs.

Yes, I know that kind of machine. Most banks in Belgium use them too. But if they try to count a pile of 5Es, almost always the machine gets stuck because very used notes stop the machineavij wrote:We have a nice machine at work for counting the notes: I can put a stack of about 60-70 notes (of the same value) on the scale and it'll tell me that the stack contains 68 notes, 1360€. Than they have to count by hand
We do get a lot of used notes around here. Just last week, I've received a €10 duct-taped bill off the wall! On the same batch of bills was an Irish bill which had been scribbled on the watermark area... I don't think banks are very careful here in Portugal about the wearing of banknotes. The only place where I know I'll find (almost) for sure brand new bills is at the internal ATM's of my bank, Caixa Geral de Depósitos. Multibancos usually have already-circulated bills.

This machine doesn't care if the notes are used or not, there is no physical movement involved for the notes. It just checks the weight of the note stack and calculates how many notes there are. It doesn't care if some notes are horribly wrinkled because they still have the same weight.bhoeyb wrote:But if they try to count a pile of 5Es, almost always the machine gets stuck because very used notes stop the machine![]()

But when I ask for notes inside the post office, I get very very wrinkled notes sometimes.

Re: Used notes from an ATM
The notes are often sorted into three piles in the NCBs. One pile for notes which will be shredded, one for those with many wrinkles and one for almost perfect ones. They send the best ones to ATMs and the wrinkled ones to shops and other places like that.Fons wrote: I get used notes very often, but the're note very wrinlked, sometimes a bit wrinkled.
