The Austrian national bank is interested in ebt

Post by jack_isidore »

here are some outcomes of our visit in the austrian national bank (oenb) from 01/19/2007:

- since november 2006, the amount of euros in the world is higher than the amount of dollars :!:
- most of the issued eurobills in slovenia are coming from the oenb therefore it is no wonder, that there are so many hits with austrian users.
- austria receives much more 50 euro notes than needed. therefor, a huge amount is transferred to other euro-countries. so austrians should enter many 50 euro to raise the international hit-probability.
- 10 to 15 % of the notes that come to the oenb do not leave it anymore and will be shreddered.

we had also the opportunity to compare fake notes to real ones. the faked ones came directly from circulation, so they were, if you like “real” fake notes. that was amazing. :)

but the most amazing thing is the ongoing project of the oenb to register the serials of the eurobills beginning with the launch of the second eurobill-generation in approx. 2010. this will happen automaticly by a machine, which is capable to register up to 300.000 bills a day!!! Reason for this is the idea, to follow the way of the bills to get better informations to plan ahead the quantity and demand of new eurobills. There are some few other national banks, which register already the serials but there is no interest or contact as far as i know to ebt.

the project manager and his team, altough, is very interested in eurobilltracker. he said, that maybe there could be some kind of cooperation between them and us. how this should look alike is not possible to say at the moment, but...

this is something we should carefully discuss even this is only a long term idea. what to do if the oenb asks for joining to ebt and offering billions of serials? is it possible to give them a special status, not like a user but lets say as an “institutional”? do we want this? what are the implications?

lets open the discussion with some initial considerations: pros: (many) more hits, therefore more motivation for new users to stick to ebt., more publicity, effects to other institutionals to join us. cons: bias to the statistics, no serials can be provided by automatic entry, lack of charm if there are non physical persons incorporated.

and lastly another option, which could be technically possible: to regognize the notes before beeing shreddered. that would imply that you get informed, on which day the bill you’ve entered “died”. pooh 8O 8O 8O

Ouch!

From: Österreichische Nationalbank
Subject: Your note Nxxxx7416xxx has been destroyed.

...and so on. :(

Actually I was already thinking of something like that when I once saw the process of the automatic separation of notes not fit for recirculation. There are high-speed cameras scanning every single bill and comparing it to a "perfect" one. Anything not matching the original (writing, ducktape and so on) is automatically withdrawn from circulation.

Of course the whole thing would make nice "hits" (Helsinki - Wien - OENB - OENB - OENB - Graz ), but I personally don't know if it's very interesting if the national bank is leading all rankings.

Edit: Well, actually the example mentioned above wouldn't work. The computer of the bank would always get statements like this:
You have already entered this note on 2007-01-20 15:50:24. You are probably making a mistake.

I understand very well that the oenb is interested in EBT, because EBT contains a huge cache of unique knowledge, knowledge that is resonable trustworthy thanks to the continuing efforts to purge cheaters.

Every note starts somewhere from a bank..

If 2% of all (new) notes are put into EBT by a bank , I don't think high of having a hit ..

But.... if they by some machine enter all notes coming into the bank..
This changes..
If you can't solve it it's not a problem..

That could be implemented so that the central bank hits would be mentioned with smaller text elsewhere. It could say "and by the way, this note visited the Austrian central bank on July the 32nd, 2098". That way it wouldn't distract.

yes, that was considered for the incoming notes. they will be checked for their quality, set back to circulation or destroyed.

I think this is a great idea. But the national bank should get a special status. If you don't do that, they are leading in all rankings and that is not a good idea. So give them a special status.

The serials can be provided but not the printer codes. And we all know that the printer codes can be calculated in most (all?) cases if the serial number is known.

I think it's a great idea that a central bank is interested in EBT.
I'd also agree on that user having a special profile and not appear in "normal" statistics.
The idea of knowing which bills have been destroyed is also relevant. If one of my bills become a hit with the user Austrian centralbank, with a comment "destroyed", I wouldn't expect any more hits with that bill.
There is another advantage - a bill destroyed that becomes a new hit afterwards will be suspicious
It's nice to know that our community/hobby has some relevant information.

That is a very good advantage.

I also think that a special "status" should be given to the Austrian (or any other) central bank.

disadvantages

Post by cvbj »

1.Banks are interested in control, so they should be distrusted by a bunch of people interested in a hobby that's gnawing at their power like bill-tracking.

2.The data the oenb offers, like which bills are issued, we already know, by their shortcode and serial-number. Which bills are destroyed, i do not want to know, and besides its no real surplus for any user to know that one of his or her bills ended in Austria. Furthermore I doubt very much whether the oenb will take the effort of accurately taking down the numbers of each bill they take out, cause thats a lot of manpower which does not achieve any earnings.

3.EBT should be willing to give institutions, like banks and governments, access to specific data that EBT has and they would like to have, but EBT should be unwilling to be institutionialised by either banks or governments.

4.I dont think it would be very tempting for new austrian users to know for sure that every new bill would be a hit, hittee oenb!

That wouldn't be done manually at all I suppose, as every single note is scanned automatically prior to destruction anyway. I even suppose that there somewhere is a database of all serial numbers that have been removed from circulation.
