First there was too little people and then too much, please make up your minds! Seriously, there was an event involving soon to graduating high schoolers, dressing up funnily, throwing candy and riding on a lorry all over the town. It happens all over Finland this time of the year. Someone with better babel skills should explain what it means, I'm not capable. :D

Here's a few pictures. (kuva = picture)
nice pictures :D

it looks like a kind of carnival to me :)

A person who's just finished lukio (upper secondary school) and heads fot the university is called an abiturient, better known as "abi".
The abis are loaded on a truck and driven around the town. While on the truck, they throw lots and lots of candy to the ground from where gazillion other Finns gather it and eat it away. Screaming like hell, of course. Because screaming is so nice.
Each city has their own routes for the abi trucks. In Espoo the abis throw their candy to the yard of the school they leave from. In Helsinki they drive two times around the Esplanade park, which is a bit less than 1km long and something like 50m wide park in central Helsinki. (the most beautiful place on this planet in July or August, BTW ;)). That's also where they throw their candies.
This year there were 44 abi trucks driving around the park. You can only imagine how many people came watching it from this town with over half a million people (Oulu only has a bit over 100 000) :) And how much candy. A nice thing was that there were also two trucks which looked like they were older than the war. They looked great.
All trucks had signs written by the abis. The signs are some 1,5m high and 3m wide. Or something like that. One on each side of the truck. Something funny is always written on them. Many refer to the name of the school or have the word "abi" "hidden" somewhere in it. Like for example one (the worst one, IMO) had a text saying "wank-a-bit".
The abis also tend to wear some weird clothes. In Helsinki most of them just wear completely white clothes and paint some odd stuff on them. They may also have weird masks or something like that. THe people from the lukio of Munkkivuori had monk robes on them ("munkki" = "monk" or "donut". "vuori" = "mountain").
So, this kind of a happening. Once a year. See it and become mad ;)

It looks like it is quite green in Europe, when I look those webcams outside Finland. Here the ice on river has started to melt. Still only under bridges, where the current is stonger. It seems the river will be icefree unusually early this year. Maybe this weekend or next week this river will be full of floating ice heading to the sea. Previous years there has been a short lived ice dam on this spot.

Edit May 1st: Ice hasn't moved yet, although there is open water under the bridge. Maybe during next week.

Here is the link to our traffic camera around Dublin city centre
http://www.dublincity.ie/traffic/frame_c.htm

If you put the mouse over the little camera they say where they are. The one for O'Connell Bridge is pretty much looking up the main street in Dublin.

This one is for a main shopping area (pedestian)

I know that the webcams of Tampere have been listed before, but now there's a new one. If you have the possibility of keeping an eye on the first one tomorrow, 1st of May starting around noon (CET), you'll see some strange things. There's going to be a huge crane which dips people into the river. It's a tradition for the first year students at the University of Technology to have that cold swim, and the water is still freezing cold (mind you, the ice on the local lakes has melted only last week). I've been there as well!

We got just a new webcam here at Joensuu. Now you can see the marketplace (quiet during the winter time), "park of liberty", city hall and main church. Here's the picture (refresh the page to see it change or look here).
