translations on Babel
I ahve made the translations in French for the newest ssections, the one covering the 10.000.000st banknote (press release and welcoming word).
This has been done yesterday and it stills appears only in English while opening the French version.
I know there is always a delay ; but this one is a bit long...
Any problem ?

Hi,
There's currently no automatism for publishing translations on the site, which means that either Avij or I have to do this manually. As you can see, it hasn't been done since you submitted your translation, and should happen tonight.

Re: translations on Babel
There is now a string for translation "The total value of all entered notes is $a EUR. The average value of your notes is $b EUR."
Can EUR be replaced with €? If not, according to ECB rules, EUR should go in front of the amount.

Technically there's no restriction on using the € symbol. If it feels more "right", feel free to use the € symbol instead.MDeen wrote:There is now a string for translation "The total value of all entered notes is $a EUR. The average value of your notes is $b EUR."

Re: translations on Babel
I had problem whilst translating the sentence "you entred $a bills in $bcountry"
Indeed, in French if "$bcountry" varies, the word "in" may vary
example :
in The Netherlands = "aux Pays-Bas"
in France = "en France"
In Monaco= "à Monaco"
In United Kingdom = "au Royaume-Uni"
I had to tanslate in saying something such as "you entred $a bills in the country "$bcountry""
But this sounds reallly poor.
I would suggest to have as a variable "$in$country" and to add a didacted translation for all countries ; a lot of work for only a small sentence ; but it looks like a similar request as the varying plural in Slovenian.
Another solution would be to avoid using such sentences and therefor avoid similar translations.

As a french translator, you're free to do so.Phaseolus wrote:Another solution would be to avoid using such sentences and therefor avoid similar translations.
How about using the most common term? In german there's a similar problem, but those special forms only apply to few countries, so going with the most common preposition is suitable.

Re: translations on Babel
Yes, but this is not satisfactory ; it is the same issue as the Slovenian Plural. If we want EBT to stay a multi-cultural and multilingual project, such things should also be considered.Nerzhul wrote:As a french translator, you're free to do so.Phaseolus wrote:Another solution would be to avoid using such sentences and therefor avoid similar translations.

Re: translations on Babel
I second this. The "most common term" will lead to phrases like "Du hast 100 Scheine in Schweiz eingegeben" which sounds rather wierdPhaseolus wrote:I would suggest to have as a variable "$incountry" and to add a didacted translation for all countries
but this could be difficult as every language has different cases where a new variable has to be used, and then one variable will make only sense for one language each. It could be possible to use "rules" for the variable, for example for English:
$incountry = ($country in {"United Kingdom", "United States"}) ? ("in the " + $country) : ("in " + $country)
so the table has to have the values for $incountry only for French and not for English

The cow answered: "Moo."

Re: translations on Babel
My point was rather to ask developpers to build such sentences under a table-form :
instead of "you entered $a bills in $bcountry", I would prefer :
"$bcountry : $a bills entered"
I admit it looks less "sexy", but, when you click on your profile and look at the statistics it does not matter if we use "sentences" or "tables".
I know Nerzhul will say that as a translator, I could arrange this, but I have to things to answer to this tought :
1. I am a translator, not an interpretor ; which means that I am not supposed to "change" the text
2. as a translator we do not know how the senetnce will be linked t other items on the screen. So changing this is a bit hard.
But indeed this is a very minor point.

Re: translations on Babel
A country-fellow ebtist asked on the Portuguese forum why some international city names are translated and some are not.
In fact, some of the very important towns (EBT-wise and otherwise) are commonly referred in Portuguese by their Portuguese translated names (even in reference newspapers), but haven't been translated yet on EBT.
I am not sure if I could do it using Babel (being a translator myself) but I don't think so. So here's a list with only a handful of carefully selected towns whose names should be translated. I checked on Público newspaper's style guide, and yet I was picky enough not to choose names that didn't sound completely colloquial to me. I only checked Eurozone names.
The list:
336 A Coruña — Corunha
1820 Alessandria — Alexandria
3360 Amsterdam — Amesterdão
3827 Antwerpen — Antuérpia
4888 Athens — Atenas
9392 Bergamo — Bérgamo
9700 Berlin — Berlim
11888 Bologna — Bolonha
11988 Bonn — Bona
12120 Bordeaux — Bordéus
14107 Brugge — Bruges
18848 Korinthos — Corinto
20841 Den Haag — Haia
27642 Firenze — Florença
31103 Genova — Génova
36240 Hamburg — Hamburgo
38885 Helsinki — Helsínquia
57324 Luxembourg — Luxemburgo
58311 Mantova — Mântua
58998 Marseille — Marselha
59614 Monaco — Mónaco
64257 Murcia — Múrcia
67304 Nicosia — Nicósia
69050 Nürnberg — Nuremberga
71662 Orléans — Orleães
72630 Padova — Pádua
72785 Palma de Mallorca — Palma de Maiorca
74892 Piraeus — Pireu
82039 Rotterdam — Roterdão
86219 San Marino — São Marino
88082 Sevilla — Sevilha
91000 Segovia — Segóvia
102340 Strasbourg — Estrasburgo
102706 Stuttgart — Estugarda
104540 Thessaloniki — Salónica
105295 Torino — Turim
108000 Venezia — Veneza
116621 Zaragoza — Saragoça
Should I also check non-Eurozone towns?

Thanks for your input. This topic has been discussed some times already in the past (e.g. here).lmviterbo wrote:In fact, some of the very important towns (EBT-wise and otherwise) are commonly referred in Portuguese by their Portuguese translated names (even in reference newspapers), but haven't been translated yet on EBT.
In short, yes, this is still on my todo list, but the solution will most likely not use Babel. I cannot give you an estimate when a solution will be implemented, but it's really only a matter of when, not if.
