Euro in Hungary, Estonia and the Czech republic

Post by Olivier »

Hello!

I have just read in Courrier International, a serious french newspaper, that the leaders of Hungary and Czech republic want to get the euro as soon as possible.
Their wish is to get a better stability for their economies, moreover if they join in 2004.

For the present time, the Czech Republic doesn't fill the criterium of 3% of deficit of the national product. Hungary and Estonia feel ready and plan to join the euro very soon (guess in 2005 or 2006).

So, I wonder if we'll get euro-coins of Estonia and Hungary before euro-coins of Britain, Sweden and Denmark. :)

That's right that your languages are from the same family. :)
Craft wrote: About Estonia: they have moved very fast towards western standard of life after regaining their independence. The currency rate of the Estonian kroon is fixed to the euro (as discussed a couple of months ago here, 1€=15.6466EEK - I hope I got it right this time ;)), but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be straightforward to change the kroon to euro one day after becoming a member to EU. Yet, maybe it will...
Imagine Estonia decides (with the agreement of Brussel) to get the euro in 2004... would it have enough time to make its own coins and notes?
Does the ECB have enough stocks to help it (so estonians could start using euros from the other 12 countries while their country is printing money)?

But if Estonia joined to the euro just because they already have a flat rate with it, wouldn't be fair with other countries, and themselfs...

of course it's possible. Greece has made it in one year so why not Estonia. Other countries could help them.

I'm not sure but I remember that I read somewhere that Denmark can't make a new EMU referendum so soon because they have already had one. Also, it's pretty sure that Sweden is going to have an EMU referendum next year: http://www.euobserver.com/index.phtml?aid=7866

Sweden started the preparations this week by publishing an estimate of the euro - krona exchange rate:

And latest signs are that even the rest of the Brits are warming to it. Still not quite a majority in favour, but the overwhelming majority thinks it is inevitable by 2010.

Knew I was a trend-setter.

Yes, true... Britons will more and more think about getting the euro if the Czech, Polish, Hungarians, Slovenians... get euros juste after the Danes and the Swedish.
They can definitly not stay alone.

Unless they adopt... the US dollar...

BTW, there was a debate in Canada, about getting (or not) the US dollar. Some say Europe has reached to do it, why not America. Others say it's a lost of sovereignty and that the both economies (Canadian and US) are not close enough to share the same currency.

We are an example for the rest of the world.

There is a project I heard to trade places with Cuba ... (shift island over ocean)
So they would move their Island closer to the US, and the US would get rid of their problem ...

(plus : their Al-Quada prisoners would be safe over the ocean ...)
Time is on our side ...

The situation of the prisonners in Guantanamo is really a scandal... The United States talk about freedom, good and evil... but don't even respect the Convention of Geneva for the prisonners.

I don't agree! How tolerant can one be about intolerance? How tolerant can one be about terrorist organizations?
These people that were captured in Afghanistan, that are not members of a regular army but acted as if, that are members of obscure terror networks whose aim is to make terrorist attacks, should they be in a regular criminal prison? No, they shouldn't, they are prisonners of war!
They have rigths - to have a proper and clean cell and respect of beliefs, not to be tortured, and many more. I'm sure there is a very big difference when compared with taliban treatment to prisonners.

maybe the real Al-quaida memebers. shouldn't be hold in a normal prison. but most of the captured people were just simple analfabethic soldiers. but they certainly shouldn't be transported and holded like pigs and that is wath america is doing.

Yes! Amnesty International has told about the situation which is terrible. These criminels (I don't deny they are) have still the right not to be tortured, linked with chains...

I don't understand how a civilized country can allow that!

I am also very chocked by the death penalt in some US states (Texas, Florida, California...)
