Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
i think for banks outside europe they keep it in there own branch ( to reduce costs with national banks )
as long as they dont have a huge overstock they will keep the notes with them

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
For me here in the UK, I have been using Post Offices a lot as they don't charge commission meaning you can buy €5 for about £4.80 (at the moment, their rates are not great!
) And it seems to me that the smaller denominations (€5s and €10s) are nearly always new notes; even when I see some old notes in the bundle, they are often passed over in favour of the new notes.... so no chance of an active hit
Only once I buy €50 notes, do I normally get used notes.
I don't know what this means (!) but it suggests to me that many people do not exchange their notes back to GBP once they return from their travels in the Eurozone, which I guess makes sense as most people I'm sure will travel to "the continent" 2 or 3 times a year....
So far, though, I have never received back the same note in the UK. But it is probably very unlikely it will ever happen as I rarely spend notes in the UK that I have picked up in the UK. (My only passive hit was in Austria when I spent a €5 at the top of a ski run and got it back at the bottom the next day!)

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
I remember we had only high denominations like
and
. and they were mostly brand new.
I can also see this trend in Brits and other non-eurozone residents.

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
You're right, almost nobody uses £50s as they are hardly accepted anywhere.
I remember when I used to work behind the graduates bar at University, which was open to postgraduates and foreign students, and each year at the start of the new academic year, we would be overwhelmed with £50 notes brought over by Erasmus students and new foreign postgrads!
And in case you kept any £20 notes, be careful if you want to spend them on a future trip... The older design for the £20 featuring Edward Elgar will stop being legal tender from the end of June (in favour of the newer design featuring Adam Smith) - although you'll still be able to exchange at a bank...

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
Here in Laos I have been able to find one place in Vientiane with a bundle of almost new
and another exchange in Luang Prabang had luckily one
which I took in part of 1x
transfer to local currency (Kips). Getting euronotes was easier in Thailand and Hong Kong than here, maybe because of much more EU-travellers, even finnish people, down there. But I think that's true, that here in Asia is not much places with smaller euro-denominations to give you outside the eurozone.
Next I'll try changing notes in Bangkok (I already had notes from there from last visit a few weeks ago, so I'm not trying really hard) and Macau (Where I will try to change my last
to local currency and the best amount of euros. Let's see....)

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
I made some effort to find Euro notes in Cambodia, but did not manage to get any, although I only had the time to look a lot when I was in Sihanoukville on the coast. Although there were a lot of banks (and European visitors) none seemed to have any stock at all of € - I just assume they get rid of them all every night!!Luumi wrote:Here in Laos I have been able to find one place in Vientiane with a bundle of almost newand another exchange in Luang Prabang had luckily one

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
(This is probably a bit offtopic)
I discovered the best way to get Euros in Southeast Asia is the "40 Euro trick" - just try to exchange a 50 Euro note to local currency and ask for 10 Euro back.
Sometimes you have to argue a bit, sometimes you can only exchange 30 Euro to Kip/Baht/Riel/Dong etc if they only have a 20, sometimes you have to be flexible and offer them small change for the only 50 Euro note they have (surprise surprise
) and often the money changer booth simply doesn't have any Euros lying around ... but generally this leads to MUCH better results than walking into a bank and trying to exchange local currency to Euros. (Actually I believe this is next to impossible outside any major airports in Asia, even if they have Euros they'll simply refuse to exchange the money.)

Re: Notes rotation in banks outside eurozone
Back home in Canada, my bank (HSBC) only had
notes, I withdrew 10000€ and they counted it all out in
notes. Too bad I wasn't on EBT at the time, but I would hazard a guess 99% of them didn't make it past the bank because they were all in bad shape (most were stained, had writing on them and were very worn).
But normally, I remember getting Euros from the bank before and they were always in brand new bills, but banks only had bills like
(if they had any) and other money changers would have all denominations.
In Asia, it's common for the banks to have very high stocks of
or
notes and almost never have small bills. I know because many students who came to Austria on exchange from Hong Kong or China only had
notes on them and had lots of problems using them (I swapped 1/2 my
for them before putting them in the bank). And from prior experience, they are reluctant or will downright refuse to change only a small portion of a large note, as a few years back I tried changing only 500 CHF of a 1000 CHF note and 3 branches refused to do it before I found one that would.
