Please help me plan my summer road trip!

Post by bocky »

Hi there!

I'm planning on spending a full month on a road trip through Europe. We have only a rough sketch of the route we'll be taking, so we're open to your suggestions. Here's the route:

Image

The goal of this trip is not to visit any area extensively, but to visit many different places. With that in mind, we are planning to spend only one full day in each city we'll be staying (one day to drive there, one day to visit), with the exceptions of Paris (my girlfriend really wants to go there) and Köln (I have family there). You can see each place we'll stop and sleep in by the color of the lines, when it changes from light to dark (or vice versa) it means we'll sleep there. In red are possible shortcuts to take if we're behind schedule.

Here are the cities we are planning to visit and/or sleep in:
San Sebastián, Bordeaux, Saint-Malo, Paris, Brussel, Amsterdam, Köln, Praha, Bratislava, Wien, Innsbruck, Zürich, Milano, Carcassonne, Andorra la Vella, Madrid.

You can help if...
...you know some place along that route that is worth a small detour for a quick visit,
...you think we should choose another city to sleep in some day,
...you think some part of the route is boring and we should change it slightly so we can see interesting places,
...you know pretty well a city we'll sleep in or pass by (or near) and know what we should visit there,
...you know nice and cheap hotels or camping places in those cities,
...you have any other idea!

 I've made a Google Map that anyone can edit (please don't change the lines, though), so feel free to add placemarks in places of interest, it would be great! :D

If for any reason you can't add placemarks to that map (or even if you do), feel free to give your suggestions in this thread!

Thanks :D

Congratulations - nice trip you plan!

My comment and suggestion: Plan some more time and drive from Cologne along the river Rhine to Wiesbaden and on to Frankfurt. The stretch between Cologne and Rüdesheim am Rhein is full with medieval castles - several dozens it is already a UNESCO World Heritage. Would be a real pity if you missed that.

Even from Japan tourists come in droves to see this part.

As it is a "Bundesstraße" (major road) be prepared that lots of tourists and excursionists are on the way - particularly during the holiday peak in summer and generally on week-ends. You may lose time. On the other hand there are scenic view points over and over again. At least at some you might like to stop and enjoy the romantic-medieval scenery.

Being there you should take the time to visit one of these castles; if possibly with a guided tour. A very good and genuine insight into the medieval life of the knights on the castles is given at castle "Marksburg", over the town of Braubach. (A few kilometers east of Koblenz). It is the only castle that has never been destroyed and which looks (almost) 100% as it looked like some 500 years ago! You will see the weapons, armures from different periods, the buildings from inside along with a kitchen, dining room, living room etc., the panoramic view and - yes - the torture chamber. (Sweet dreams next night!)

And make sure that at least from Koblenz on direction to Frankfurt you take the left side of the river Rhine, road B42. From there views are even nicer than from the other side (B9).

Some 70 kilometers after Koblenz you might face your first challenge: The railway crosses B42-road right at the western entrance of the (highly touristy) town of Rüdesheim. High traffic of tourists and the ferry boats that debark cars there may lead to time-consuming traffic congestions.

Right after Rüdesheim, heading east still along B42, comes the next point you should pay a visit to: The town of Geisenheim. It is nothing special (for tourists), but it is my dear home town. :D Am always glad to find EBTers leaving and getting bills there... You would be the first EBT-visitor from the Iberian peninsula.

Your time to plan: Without any visit to any castles and mainly driving, calculate with at least around four hours to get from Cologne to Frankfurt. Well, depends on the season and the traffic if it will be less or more.

Forget about travelling along the river Rhine between Koblenz and Rüdesheim (both sides of the river) during the last sunday of June. Traditionally, both roads are blocked that day. Access is only allowed for skaters and bicycle drivers. I cycle this road almost every year because it is sooooooooooo beautiful!

Should you be around Rüdesheim at noon time better find yourself another town for lunch. (Geisenheim?) Prices are touristy in the restaurants and they might be full anyway. All the other towns east of Rüdesheim are quite void of tourists. Prices are lower and parking lots easier to find.

In this wine area between Koblenz until Wiesbaden you might feel seduced to sip a small glass of wine at the event of an informal wine testing. Apart from that no-go of drinking and driving, please be aware that our wines are a bit strong! Some friends of mine from abroad or from other German regions have already learnt quite a lesson (with quite a headache....)

Okay, that's it first. Depending on which day you will pass our region and if you might change your plans completely and stay for a day, let me know. We might meet and I can show you some things. In any case you are prone to get a very interesting EBT-map.

4 Short Tips:

-Amsterdam: taking a car there is the worst possible idea. Amsterdam is a anti-car town. Better to go to Delft, and find an Hotel there, and then take a train from there to Amsterdam. Delft is also a beautiful city to visit, and Holland is a country set up to travel by train.

-Innsbruck (roads): If you go from Vienna (Wien) using Austrian Highways you need to buy a sticker (vignette) for 10 days. (you will also need one for Switzerland). In adition you need to pay extra for some tunnels like the Arlberg. One option here to shorten you travel times is to visit Salzburg instead of Innsbruck. From there you can take the German Highway to Munich and from there to Lindau (Lake Constance, read below). It shortens the travel time considerably. If you prefer more scenic routes I would suggest Innsbruck and then the Arlberg mountain pass instead of the tunnel. (but consider the extra travel time required)

-Zurich: there is an Easyhotel (from the easyjet group) in Zurich. It is in the center and quite cheap. On the way you are driving by the Lake Constance (Bodensee). This lake is extremely beautiful. I would suggest going to Bregrenz (Austria), and there exit the highway and take the road to Lindau (Germany) and visit that town. From then continue around the lake to Friedrichshafen. From there get your car in the ferry boat to Romanshorn (Switzerland). It goes every hour, but if you can get it around sunset it is perfect. There is also a ferry from Meersbrug to Constance (Kostanz, Germany) that goes 4 times an hour. In that case near Constance there is the island of Mainau, which is a kind of flower island. Your girlfriend should like it... Take that option only if you have more time, you should be in Constance around 15h00 or 16h00 otherwise it is not worth the money you pay.

-Toulouse (Lourdes?) - You propose to drive from Milano across the whole Côte d'Azur to close to the border with Spain in one day. To me this drive would take almost two weeks... I am speculating you are planning a visit to Lourdes? EBT-wise a stop in Monaco is mandatory, it is also worth to stop in one of this trio (Cannes, Antibes, Nice)

Nice trip.
i just add a placemark to your map.
i don't know if you are interested in "Alphabets of Locations" in your NIG-stats.
but Xanten is the only city in Germany starting with a X.

You're not the first to suggest that route! I already changed my Google Map to visit that area, thanks. Your post was very informative.

According to Google Maps it would be possible to use part of the tunnel and then exit to the mountain pass, or vice versa. What do you think?
CarlosManta wrote:(...)Lake Constance(...)
Sounds nice, I have added it to the route.
CarlosManta wrote:Toulouse (...) Côte d'Azur
Yeah, I'll probably stay more time in the south cost of France, maybe in Nice. I have changed the map lines.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, keep them coming!

When are you going? If it's during the last weekend of july, you have to include Florence of course.

PLEASE: stop at SALAMANCA in Spain. You will not regret it even if you spend a whole day there.

It is not that I live there (I live well far from there) neither there are interesting concentration of trackers... the main thing there is the city itself: you will love the colour of the stone-buildings and the 'looking' of all those constructions. It is a well-worth-visiting city, and if you have never been there, it is a good spot!

Oh, and you can stop at Ciudad Rodrigo for lunch (the first day of your trip). I recommend it to you ;)

Yet an additional suggestion: TOLEDO. Do not miss that city; again, you can spend half a day or even a whole day there and you will not get bored of it!

I would be able to suggest quite a lot of other places to you to stop at (valladolid, Burgos and its cathedral, Zaragoza...), but as you have a long route, perhaps you can just glance those places and go back other year. I think the mentioned ones are the "principal" places that you must visit. You cannot miss them in such a trip!!

Well... those are the suggestions for Spain, other users may suggest for their own countries (I could do so, but I don't dare  )
Be sure to track every single note once you are near Santander... we may have a hit! :P
BTW: people who like San Sebastian, usually like Santander as well, but I preffer not to change your route. (Besides: I might be influenced because I live there  )

HAVE FUN IN YOUR HOLIDAYS!! :D :D and :note-5: :note-10: :note-20: :note-50: :note-100: :note-200: :note-500:

I'm wondering about the small detour you are planning to the northwest of Hungary :) Are you visiting Győr? Or Pannonhalma archabbey? I'm quite curious because I haven't heard of many people who come to Hungary but don't visit Budapest.

But maybe it's a good idea not to go to Budapest now but one day in the future because you really need several days, not just one, to discover this city :)

It will probably be in August, the full month.

Well, my plan is to skip Spain this time. Why? First, it's a long route and Spain is just next door, so I can visit it whenever I like. Also, I have already been in a lot of places in Spain. :)

Yes, it's my plan to go to Györ for a few hours, so I can say I was in Hungary! It would be a pity to be less than 50km from Hungary and not go there... Györ is the closest city, so I drew the route there. Are there any interesting places around there? I'd like really much to visit Budapest, but I probably won't have much time left on that part of the journey.

If you go to Győr, I think it would be a sin not to go to Pannonhalma :) It's only 20 kms from Győr and - I think - this abbey is one of the most fantastic places in Hungary (it's on the UNESCO list). They have a website with all the necessary information: http://www.bences.hu/en/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and they do English guides (the pdf, which loads a bit slowly, says that you have to register for foreign language guides, but in 2007 we just went there with my Polish friend without any registration)
As for my opinion, besides the beautiful houses in the town centre and the Episcopal Castle there isn't anything else you might want to see in Győr, so I think you can easily visit Győr and Pannonhalma on the same day.
Also, if you like hidden local treasures, I recommend you look for this small workshop in Győr: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/21275279" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - the address is Dr. Kovács Pál u. 9. This craft is called kékfestő or blue-dye and it's very typical to this part of Hungary (and also to some parts of Germany and Austria as far as I know)

I was there in August last year, and some shops/places were closed because of the ferragosto holidays.

Last weekend of July there's the Summer EBT Meeting, bocky.

I saw that in Italy you are going to see only one town: Milano.
Have you a particular reason for choosing Milano? It is one of the less interesting town in Italy, from the touristical point of view
