Convention... should Europe be a monarchy?

Post by Olivier »

Half of the 15 states of the European Union are monarchies: Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and United Kingdom.

Some of our neighbours are also: Norway, Monaco, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Vatican.

The Convention is working on the Constitution of the European Union.
Would you like Europe to get a king or a queen?

Olivier

(newt poll: who? )

Olivier, you could save this poll for April, 1st
Did I gave you the idea with this post of mine?
I heard they have a new idea for the new constitution: Queen Elizabeth will be the Queen of European Union

Wow, I'm funny! 8)

President sounds better.. If the EU wants the leader to have any kind of real power, it has to be a democratically elected president. Monarchs can only be representatives.

I want a president. The time of monarchs is over (at least for now), but an invidual leader would sure be good, because then we would have a single person to represent the EU so it would be clearer for everyone who is in command. And that is absolutely good, because the biggest obstruction for EU becoming really great is that it's unclear for the ordinary people who leads it and how it works. Now it's just "Brysselin herrat" (The Mr.'s of Brussels) who say what to do. One face that is familiar to everyone would change this.

I totaly agree with you. The question is how could this president be elected? By the parlement? By the european electors? Named by the heads of state?
What would be his/her power? Strong power, like in France? Weak, like in Italy?

I would not be opposed for a symbolic power, and let the power to the President of the government...

I have read that Tony Blair and Jose Maria Aznar would like to be the first president of Europe...

my question is: Who, of these 2 is the worse?

I guess that Aznar with all the power he would get would become worse.. although Blair... is tough..

but between those 2 I think I'll vote for Bush..

Yes he has, but what i said, or tried to, is that we need someone like him here in Europe.

but this new generation of European politicians just sucks (Blair, Aznar, Chirac, Durão, Portas, Fortuyn, Berlusconi...etc)...
