Hello fellows ETBers.
I'm visiting Belgium from 22nd to 29th December, with my family (me+wife+4 year old daughter). We'll arrive at Brussels and visiting relatives in Leuven.
We plan to rent a car, so we can have some mobility (I'd like also to hunt some dots ).
Opinion of locals would be highly appreciated about the accommodation in/near Leuven you recommend (or to avoid) and spots to visit/dot hunt (as far as I see, Brussels alone has 4 dots, which also include Leuven!).
Public transport can be an option, too. Not sure, but I would guess rental cars might be cheaper off-airport, too. By train (2x/hour) it's only 15' to Leuven. Single ticket is €9.40 (airport supplement included), but NMBS has a temporary offer for Duo travellers. Cheaper, but longer is the bus of De lijn, you can get a 10 trip ticket for €16, or singles for €3 (and less in the app).
Do visit in Leuven:
Abdij van Park
Arenberg Castle and park
St-Pieterskerk
University library
If you like cloudy winter walks in nature, the aforementioned park at Arenberg Castle is nice, as is the Provincial Domain and nearby Abdij van Vlierbeek. Forest walks (get good shoes) in Heverleebos, Meerdaalwoud or Egenhoven.
Do in Brussels:
Horta museum
Train World (Railway museum in and next to Schaerbeek station, with a temporary exposition on the Orient Express. (Attention, they will be closed from 25-27/12)
Fine Arts Museum (who will close next year for a long renovation)
Villa Empain (beautiful art deco villa with temporary exposition on Lebanon)
Jewish Museum (expo on Sol LeWitt)
Cinematek for old films
Comics art museum
Comics wall walk
Tips for food in Brussels:
Les Filles
Horloge du Sud (African food)
In 't Spinnekopke or La Fleur en Papier Dorée (Simple Brussels food in some of the oldest inns in Brussels)
Wolf (food market in old bank building)
Sorry, Leuven is a bit too long ago to really know the best places.
