Obviously the ones that get hit

If we want to get it all on a 15x10 flag, that's 5 to 6 pixels from every country

Maybe we can worry about that áfter the Newzealanders and Aussies start complaining?

See, I told you the flags & languages issue is complicated.
But to cut a long story short: Yes, it does indeed look a bit strange to have a US flag in there (imho). No, we're not going to add hybrid flags to the site. No, we're not going to replace the US flag with an UK equivalent because Philippe has a very good reason for using the US flag and EBT is his site, and I stand by his decisions.

for portuguese instead of 8 or 9 different flags we could use the portuguese language countries' community...
although probably most of the portuguese language speakers doesn't know it..
here it is the symbol, can't find a flag..
bn
PS: this community has 8 independent countries that has portuguese as their official language.. but there are at least 2 more autonomous regions with some legal status for portuguese language: Macau (China) and Galicia (Spain).. Guiné-Equatorial is an independent african country that wants to join the comunity, but actually their official language is spanish, although the most spoken one is a portuguese dialect.. Casamança is a Senegal's region that fights for independence, and if that happens someday, they'll probably join the comunity too..

Just take the flags of the biggest countries which use the respective language: India, Mexico, Brazil,...
Or choose for the countries with the biggest economic relevance (GDP): USA, Mexico, Brazil,...
BTW: Is it possible to create animated flags? The flags could change every second. For example the English language could be represented by a sequence of the flags of UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, India...

Is the very good reason the fact that an American site was what EBT was inspired on?

Or take the flag of the language's origin: UK, Spain, Portugal. That's at the same time appropriate for a website with a european topic.

That would probably look much better than the strange still hybrids.

Here is one animated flag:

This example is from
an Irish discussion forum.

In a list of languages there will be some animated flags among some still ones. A problem is that the flashing ones draw more attention than the still ones - additional attention which is not desired.

well I guess that depends much on the kind of site you have.. Ours is a world site, but specially linked to a specific region of the globe..
in fact, on EBT, all Eurozone flags should have priority, so maybe English should be represented by the Irish flag..
in the case of 2 or more countries using the same language in the Euroland, then we should use the one with more speakers, Germany for German etc..
but I like the idea of those animated flags..
bn
speaking on Ireland, no one there able to do a Gaelic version of the site?
and what about Catalan? many spanish users are from Catalan speaking areas.. and I believe that it's more spoken then Finnish, so why not a Catalan version?

Possible, sure. But clearly not desirable!
