i don't want to play wise guy, but if you make the search on the postal code instead of name of city ? I admit it's a problem for larger cities as they combine several codes.avij wrote:Sounds nice and simple in principle, but things get complicated when there are alternative spellings (and downright typos) for city names; Bru, Brusel, Brussek, Brussel, Brussel/bruxelles, Brussels, Bruxelles, Bruxelles/brussel, Bryssel, Brysseli .. Of course it doesn't mean that such stats are impossible to generate, just that it's a bit more complicated than one might initially think.dave1980 wrote:A ranking of cities?

Re: Just a minor detail: My default city
The use of postal code might look less complex, but IMHO it isn't. For instance for a Belgium city like Antwerp you can enter:Jules wrote:...

2000
B2000
BE2000
B-2000
BE-2000
In the Netherlands there is a suffix after the postal code wich designates a part of the city.
1000AA
1000AB
And in Ireland there are no postal codes at all.

Re: Just a minor detail: My default city
Oh yes, I forgot one:
This isn't really that big of a problem though. Typos can be corrected from the database, and a simple "connection" table can be created for those (relatively) few cases where there are several valid spelling options for a city name.
- Explaining how all those 165 todo list items are going to be implemented takes an enormous amount of time
That's indeed a problem, for example the city where I live has about 100 postal codes. And searching by zip code doesn't always help either, a common error is to enter something as the city name and then use the zip code from some other city.Jules wrote:i don't want to play wise guy, but if you make the search on the postal code instead of name of city ? Thanks to Avij or the person who did this. Now everyone can see which place he has on the international rank.
Great! Thanks!
Ah, look at all the lonely Euronotes. Where do they all come from? (The Beatles, Eleanor Rigby)

I just would like to get visible the city specific ranking lists. It would be nice to have on these lists the name, postal code and amount of notes. I think the city name (and probably also the postal code) could be added on the normal ranking lists. There is definitely enough of space for that and it would make it easier to read the list as there would not be so long distance between the name and amount of notes.
I would like to have also the personal diffusion pies - it would be nice to see an overview from which countries do my notes come from.
After we have got these characters, I would be happy and full satisfied ...for a moment.

Many thanks!!!!
I didn't notice the changes.... I started to read the post few days ago, but not continue....
It's nice to see the place that we are in the ranking (567th for me)
Don't you think it would be interesting to see that p.e. I'm the 5th in the city rank of how many from my city??? or p.e. I'm the 12th in the country rank of how many from my country??? Spain doesn't have a lot of users and it's easy to know how many Spaniers are here.... but what about another countries with lot of users???
Maybe anyone gave the same idea before

You're welcome
Frankly, I just had to implement something nice so that there would be something positive in the news, in addition to the news that some of the support email was lost. Nice that you liked the new feature
You're absolutely correct. Perhaps it'd make more sense if it counted only those notes that you've entered in that particular city. I think I'll change it that way, unless someone objects strongly.Annie_in_exile wrote:Am I right when I assume that all the notes entered by one person accumulate to the city which one has given as "homebase"? So if you're on holiday and enter notes in other cities and even other countries, you can be the king of the hill of your home town when you come back?

I do. I think it is better the ranking position tells the amount of the notes the user has logged altogether no matter where. Besides, it would go too complicated otherwise. If you log a huge amount of notes you have got in a small village where you visited, you would be the number one somewhere else than in the place where you live.avij wrote:You're absolutely correct. It would make more sense to make a separate list of towns/cities/municipalities where have been logged most notes and who are the main users who have done that. But maybe making that kind of a list would need so much work that it would not become true in the near future.

I don't know if it's easy to do it but maybe there should something like:
for example:
International ranking: 238 of 35000
National ranking: 442 of 6000
Ranking City: 2 of 50
So we can see how many user are below you.
