Trondheim. You'll love the scenery, the mountains and the fjords. From there you can go south and you'll find Lillehammer, Bergen and Oslo. Too bad I've only been to Trondheim and Lillehammer, and that was just after the 1994 Olympics.

Washington, D.C. Never seen so many white collar people in my life! There are great museums and famous sights. Don't just think "it's just some stupid political city" - It is not! D.C. was cool! 8) A very good vacation spot for a city trip. Or for an exchange year... :D

The island of Rhodes. If I count all my "warm vacations", I've only been to Daytona Beach (and Northern Florida), Rhodes and Sharm El Sheikh (via Eilat), so I haven't got that much experience. Out of those, I chose Rhodes. Not necessarily the city. You can stay in a hotel in the southern part of the island and visit the city during a couple of days during your stay. Too bad I wasn't an EBTer when I visited Rhodes in 2002. :(

EDIT: A damn typo.

>>> Groningen <<< I love my hometown!
>>> Paris <<< Gotta love this city, don't you
>>> Bergen, N <<< Had a great time here. Old city, great scenery. Bit expensive though, like the rest of Norway, and the weather isn't always the best.

I strongly agree. I forgot to include it in my best-of list.

There is a place in Finland called "Ii". That's the whole name. I have never been there but I guess there is not so much anything special to see.

1. Barcelona - I just love this city! The best thing is that there is lot see (architecture is just amazingly beautiful)and very nice beach near if it goes too hot.. try to avoid street La Rambla (Nothing to see there and lots of thiefs)
8O What about all the statue-men? (OK, there was some nasty fighting in the 2000/01 reveillon when I was there, but apart from that, I never had any problem in La Rambla).
Oh, Barcelona is also my number 1. Beautiful, beautiful city. Don't miss all the Gaudí buildings and visit the museums of Dalí and Miró. Sit on a street bench and observe the locals. Take a walk, see the Olympic Stadium and the night life (it has two bars for each inhabitant, or so they say :P)... I'm so stupidly in love with Barcelona, do I even need nrs. 2 and 3?
*sigh* OK...

2) Venice. I've only been there once, but it was breathtaking. It actually looks like a small flooded village when you're inside. It tries to keep that 'rustic' feeling. Watch out for the smell.

3) The Algarve. Avoid the touristy spots, head for Alvor, Pêra, Faro or Monchique (great termal water) and if you're sick of the beach, try visiting the rural inland. Beautiful sights and pretty much unspoiled.

For me the question is not so much where to go than what I'd like to do. I always try to keep three dreams alive.

1) I'd like to ride a dog sleigh somewhere in the Great North. Preferably the dogs should be samoyeds, but I'm willing to negotiate on that point.

2) I'd like to see flowing red-hot lava on a volcano. Not too close, though.

3) Ever since I was 6 years old, I've been wanting to visit the Galapagos Islands. I even thought I might take a honeymoon trip there, but wasn't meant to be. (A long-time relationship broke at the same time as there was a huge oil spill around the Galapagos. Ok, I get the point, I won't come then.) 8O :D Anyway, if I don't get there sooner, spending my 50th anniversary there would be just great. Not that I'm that old yet, but it's good to plan well ahead.

Now I really searched my atlas for the missing Aa, Oo and Uu. There are two places called Aa, one in France and one in Germany, but I couldn't find Oo and Uu. :?

And BTW in my atlas' index I saw a place called Egg in Austria.

Neither could I, but here is a list of some other rather interesting place names. Did you know there is a village called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Wales or Salsipuedes (meaning "leave if you can" in Spanish) in California, USA. How about Wedding in Germany or Loveland in the US?

Places to go

The 2 most beautiful places I've been to (and I'm glad to recommend):

Hội An, Vietnam
World Heritage. Nearby is the heavenly Cửa Đại Beach, It's also close enough to two other World Heritage sites (Huế and Mỹ Sơn).
Here's what I wrote about Hội An on my website:
  • No matter how many days you plan to stay in Hội An, you’ll regret not having planned more time. The old town is such a relic, you’ll have trouble to believe there’s even more to see and do not far away. You’ll tend to simplify your point of view, and think of Hội An as the town where you had 2 suits and a pair of pants made; or the place where you realized that Vietnamese might be the best food in the world; or the part of the country where girls are even more shockingly beautiful, because here they managed to mix Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian features – but it will prove a hard task to embrace all the feelings the town imprints on you and accept that Hội An is all that, and more. It’s also one of the few places in Vietnam where expats may feel at home, maybe because residents have been used to deal with all kind of foreigners for 13 centuries. And, of course, it’s a beautiful town. You’ll leave thinking that this might be the place in Asia where you could actual live. [If you want to know more, drop me a line].
Dolomiti (Dolomites), Italy
The most amazing mountains I've ever been to. The better ice-cream I've ever tasted (along with Santini in Cascais, Portugal!)

I could also recommend a 1-month tour in Vietnam, a 15-day train trip through Bohemia (Czech Republic) and a visit to Venice off-season.

Now some places I'd love to go to (the first 3 that come into mind):

Iceland
Amazonia
Micronesia
