I've been following this thread for a few days now and I've been thinking about it. Here are some point to consider:

1. Do we actually need to remove users? Is the database so full or slowing down that we have to delete users? What benefit would we have by deleting users?

2. If we put an extra thingy on like 10% active users... What effect will this have on possible new EBT-ers? Is it appealing to see that 90% of the users are passive?

3. (Re on ag_pt): Are we 100% sure that the serialnumbers and codes don't match? Isn't it possible that the bills are renewed by another country while keeping the serialnumber?

4. Is sending a small reminder appealing? Wouldn't a newsletter be better?

As you see these are some things to think about. I don't have any answers for them, but I think they are worth brainstorming about before we actually go into action!

You have got a good point there. The number of registered users should have almost no effect on the speed of the site. Only in SQL-queries that start from the users-tables it will slow things down a bit, but not enough to start deleting accounts.

The total amount of memory space used by user should not be that big too. So there isn’t a problem there too.

I think the main problem is the fact that the numbers of users registered does not reflect reality. Which leads us to your second point.

Putting the number of active users somewhere on the site (for instance in the about-section).
It could be something like :

  • There are 7491 users.
On last check (23 october 2002) 749 users where active last month.
You have not yet registered or logged in but should :)

Up till now no country has been caught re-using serial numbers from existing notes. The way notes are printed makes it very unlikely that serial numbers will be reused on newly printed notes.

The newsletter is better. Sending a reminder could somehow be considered as spam.

Actually, that seems to be incorrect for some X notes...
