Well, I guess this means I'll leave the ranking method calculation as it is. Thanks for your input.

avij wrote:You're absolutely correct. Perhaps it'd make more sense if it counted only those notes that you've entered in that particular city. I think I'll change it that way, unless someone objects strongly.
I can see Annie's point but I agree with Aaron that it would complicate things. You could make the same argument about the national rankings.
I would prefer to see the city ranking as it is. If, for example, bhoeyb moved to Brussels he would immediately be number one, maybe not because he has registered so many notes there, but because he would be the most active ebt user living in that city. To me that seems ok.

for example:

International ranking: 238 of 35000
National ranking: 442 of 6000
Ranking City: 2 of 50

So we can see how many user are below you.
Thanks Fons :)

This is just what I tried to explain before :)

For clarification (maybe I'm being a bit hypersensitive these days): I just wanted to ask how the new system worked, didn't even suggest that it should be changed. Happy happy. Moving swiftly on...

Another suggestion for the ranking lists.

Could we create two categories of EBters?
- the EBters who works in a shop or in a bank, and can easily register hundreds and hundreds of notes every day. We could name these EBTers the Masters
- the others who only register the few notes they get at the ATM or as money back. We could name them The Amateurs, for example.

-> The changes in the lists would be more intense, in the Masters ranking list, but also in the Amateurs list.
For the moment, it's just impossible for a new EBTer to join the top of the list, even to join the Top 330 if he has discovered the site recently.

At the same time, we could generate new ranking tops every year. Of course, we keep all the stats the same, and could see the same list as today in a EBT ranking list from 2002 to now.

To distinguish the Masters from the Amateurs, we could let every EBT choose its category in his/her My account option as we already do for the language.

Um, sorry, that's going to be an administrative nightmare. People can't be divided into those two groups cleanly, nearly everyone belongs to somewhere in the middle.

I agree that the top 330 may be seen as an unreachable goal to some, perhaps we could concentrate on the lower rankings as well, ie. "this person has gained 433 positions compared to last week" or something similar to that spirit. When I was still involved with distributed.net I remember how I started from position 150423 or so, and then after a few days I had already moved up about 50000 positions. Of course progressing in the rankings became more difficult during time, but slowly but surely I reached the 2063th position. All the time I felt that I was going somewhere, although I was always sure that I would never reach the top 1000.

Relax, nothing has changed because of your message  It just stirred some welcome discussion about this feature.

I'm not sure about the possibilities for this, but would it be possible to create something like a list of 'monthly achievements' next to the 'all time achievements'?
Every month this list would then start again at the first second of the month, only to deleted again at the last second of the month (maybe leaving a top 10 of every month in the statistics somewhere). In such a (very dynamic!) list also new members could score high. I can imagine lots of people will start racing against each other, making it more interesting for new members. Memorising the 'average member' (male, in his twenties, student) I guess this competition could be a success.
The only problem I can see is that people will start faking because they want to end high (like using doping in sport).

I think Olivier suggested also something like this, but just on a yearly basis. Personally, I think that would still be to static.

Yes, that would be better.

Why not a monthly basis, yes...

I prefer a top XX of the last 30 days in this case, not monthly based (information about the last 30 days is more realistic than information about the first days of the new month). Just like the old list in 2002 (I thought it was a top 10/15 or something). And yes, that list was very dynamic and interesting.

In the first year of EBT there was a top 10 list with people who were most
active for 15 days. Unfortunately that list is gone now... :(

I think one problem in adding a lot of new features is that it is possible the whole layout and menu system of EBT pages would have to be changed and that is a big work I guess.

If you would make a monthly list (of all users) you could at the end of the month delete everything exept for a top 10 or so, which can then be put in a 'hall of fame' or something with a 'member of the month'. After 12 months you can then also elect a 'member of the year' (this would not work when using 30 days).
I think it might even be possible to split up the monthly list in people with a grand total of, say, more then 5000 notes and people with up to 5000 notes. This would make it also for starting members (who don't enter 100 notes daily) interesting to start in the competition. The moment they have 5000 notes they're already severly addicted and with a good basis to start hunting down the big guys (bhoeyb, ~LeuBs~, ans etc.).

I thought of a second problem regarding such lists. People may start saving all numbers from month A only to put them in EBT in month B, thus doubling their normal monthly input to make a better chance to enter the monthly highscores. Such people will be a minority though.
