Hi - apologies for the slightly off-topic post, but could someone explain to me how the italian (and french) numbering system works? We only have italian new 20s here in Greece and I really have no idea about what is going on with their serials, and the same applies to the 5s that we have here too.

Thanks a lot.

I recieved this :flag-at: :note-10: N015C3 note (NB**299) at the main station in Vienna (Bipa drugstore)

Should be interesting to see where they were put into circulation... Might be issued in Austria or might be brought to the station by a tourist

The 1st letter in the serial number is the printer (S for Banca d'Italia, U for Banque de France).

The 2nd letter and the 1st digit point to the position of that note into the printing sheet (it's the same of the last two characters of the short-code in the front side of the note), like as in the following schemes:
Europa20S+20U.jpg
Europa20S+20U.jpg (289.44 KiB) Viewed 1489 times
Digits from the 2nd to the 9th is the real progressive serial number, and the last digit is a control digit.

So, if the serial number is SD4000000916:
S = the printer is Banca d'Italia, Italy;
D4 = 4th row and 3rd column into the printing sheet (and the short-code will be SxxxD3);
00000091 = this is the 91st note printed by this printer in Europa serie for this denomination;
6 = is a control digit.
