Again, you apparently fail to realize that notes and coins are made and used quite differently. Don't know where you are from, but here in the euro area, coins are issued solely by the member states, and initially distributed in just one country. That is, Dutch circulation coins for example go to Dutch banks and other businesses, and only later "migrate" to other member states. So it is appropriate to make them "half and half", with one common side and one country specific side.

Euro notes, however, are not "national" but issued by the Eurosystem. The ECB and the NCBs decide every year which central bank/s will commission the production of what denomination/s. Those notes are then put into circulation where appropriate. Does not have much to do with "Italy makes Italian notes and then distributes them in Italy" - that's not how it works.

Also, unlike coins, the euro (and other) notes make it to many countries. People can get them at banks or currency exchange places pretty much all over the world. And I don't think it makes sense to produce lots of different varieties of each denomination just in order to make some people happy who dislike the current designs ...

well in a way it is related to tracking - the new banknotes will have a different format of serial code
will we be able to track them? and know by which country it was commission as it is with the current system?

Yes, EBT will need some changes to allow entering the new printer codes and serial numbers. These changes will be made in due course before the new banknotes are available. Fortunately the changes that will need to be made are smaller than I had feared.

Because of the new "Europa"-watermark, the Österreichische Nationalbank gave one 5-Euro-bill of the new series to the makers of the exhibition "Einfach göttlich! Mythologisches von den alten Römern bis zur heutigen Werbung". That exhibition was opened in the Schlossmuseum in Linz, Austria, on January 22nd, and can be visited at least until april 28th - so an example from that new series can already be publicly seen there (with specially highlighted new Europa-watermark)

In 2010 while visiting Tallinn and their money museum, I saw there a very shiny minted series of the actual Estonian euro coins, way before they were put into circulation in Estonia.

BTW, should there be a new " " symbol for the new series fiver? The new note is predominantly grey like the old one, but maybe there could be something to make a difference between the two "smileys"?

Well, this is a traveling exhibition, as I wrote, so it will be at one place, then move to another, and so on. Two weeks ago it ended in Frankfurt; now it can be seen in Madrid, until mid-May (see here).

The next stops will be Bratislava (this summer) and Riga (this fall). And of course every "local" government/central bank can set up something like that too. Maybe even at several different places in one country - after all, not every German went to Frankfurt to see the exhibition, and not every Spaniard will see it in Madrid ...

Yes, I know that. What I meant was that a real sample of the new could have been shown simultaneously in all countries and several places in each of them. It would have been cool to see the real note before it is released to circulation.

The exhibition contains more than just the note, which means that it's not possible to have a similar exhibition in many places at the same time. But as a "mini-exhibition", the note would have been sufficient.

Sure. And then we would have heard tons of complaints about how the ECB, or "the Eurocrats", or "Brussels", is wasting money on euro propaganda.

Besides, I don't think it is the job of the ECB, or any central bank, to show cash around. The looks of the updated €5 notes can be seen and compared to the current/old one, online and in many printed brochures. When the USA or Denmark - to pick just two recent examples - updated their bank notes, the Fed or Nationalbanken did not send samples to all local banks either ...
