There is no problem to spent your cash in Ireland. It is widely accepted.

Hits are very hard to find in Ireland, there are only 28 hits so far this year in whole Ireland. I am almost 10 month dry for hits. On the other hand, If you have a hit, there is a good change that it is an International hit :D

The ATM give us most of the times :note-20: and :note-50: sometimes i was getting a :note-5: or :note-10: but not often.

Enjoy your stay in Ireland and good luck with everything
Hi Burdie! Sad to hear about the difficulty of getting a hit in Ireland... I guess that's the same as in Spain where hits are just too rare

Hello again. In just some weeks I'll be flying to Cork for my Erasmus stay. I've been told by other people who have spent their Erasmus there that the best (and by best I mean cheapest :D ) supermarkets are Aldi and Lidl. Do you have any recommendation for a student that is on a budget and does not want to go broke when grocery shopping in :flag-ie: ? Also, are most places in Ireland Card only or is cash ok to use anywhere? Are there any machines that exchange your higher bills into lower ones and viceversa? I've heard there are some of those in other countries but I have never seen one.

Thanks in advance

As an Aldi Store Assistant I had to say that the best store is .... Aldi :D Although the prices did also rise in the last two years, we try to keep the price / quality scale as good as possible.

I have no problem to spend my money, paying cash is no problem.

I never saw a so called Retail ATM machine in Ireland. In some ATM machines you can choose a little bit how you want your notes.

heehehheeheh I'll have to trust you and go to Aldi to get my groceries :D

You mentioned that you can sometimes choose your denominations at the ATMs, which bank is the best one in that sense? I will most surely bring some notes with me but I might find myself needing some more (I'm not a fan of paying by card) and I would like to know which ones are best to choose your bills. If there are any machines giving out :note-5: or even :note-100: that would great.

Hey guys, I'm already in Ireland and I've been loving it so far. My question is, do you know any ATMs that do not charge a fee to people who withdraw money using a card that is not from an Irish bank? I got a single :note-50: from a BOI ATM the other day and it charged me €3 for that! If you know any way I can minimise these charges or completely avoid them, please let me know.

Hi 2 every 1!

I am going to Ireland in August, that's why I am taking interest in the Ireland thread here on EBT.

It seems to be hard to get bills in Ireland but there is a simple trick nobody has mentioned so far.

When you stand in a queue or there is a queue somewhere, always look, if s.o. has a bill in their hand.

If it's a fiver take 2 x 2 euros and 1 x 1 euro and ask if you can have the bill, if it's a tenner change it for 2 x 5€ and so on...

Most of the times you will be lucky! 8)

I think Irish people would treat this with suspicion if it involved a stranger.

I'm in Donegal .. haven't visited the site since August but entered a few notes today. I don't often use cash these days, which probably doesn't help!

I originally joined .. in March 2002 :-)

This June, I'm on a (primarily rail) trip through England, Scotland, Wales and hopefully Ireland, I still haven't visited Ballina and Westport, or Tralee and Cork, which should I prioritise? And do you still need :note-5: in Ireland, I can easily bring some from home...

@byrnefm: welcome back!

But you are not a stranger there, aren't you? But of course I only very rarely do it with a :note-50: . 2 x :note-10: for :note-20: still works however...

Hi again!

I've just about returned from Ireland. I had a great stay there.

As predicted it works: Also in Ireland you can ask people in a queue or at a cash desk if you can have their bill for some coins or for other bills. Sometimes they asked "What's that?" but I always got them. Which isn't always the case in Germany.

The English Market in Cork was a brilliant source for that. Also a few shops and restaurants changed my fivers.

However, I wasn't lucky to get a :note-200: ...not even a :note-100: . I tried it at two banks and at the post office, but they all claimed that they cannot change it without me having an account with them. They also said that they didn't have a :note-200: for they normally don't order them in.

I knew in advance that it would be hard, but at least I tried it.

Nevertheless, I managed to spend a few :note-100: .

They were accepted in restaurants and also the self-scanning tills accepted them.

Now let's see, if there will be a hit.

Oh by the way...what I haven't mentioned so far: I didn't go to Ireland just to visit Cork, but also to pay a visit to my sister who celebrated her 60th birthday there.
She lives in Whitegate Co.Clare (near Galway!)

Guess what I gave her as a present: 60 Berlin fivers hot of the press!

Will there be a hit with one of them?

Hiya, this probably won't help you, but I have seen such machines I Austria only. Sparkasse, but not all branches, well that is what I use anyway most for tracking. So when you will be planning a holiday trip, you might consider that.
Sorry to hear about the fee, but itvseems to be common practice that the banks charge a fee for withdrawals with foreign card. When you withdraw within the same bank group (If your Spanish bank has branches in Ireland), then there is no charge, at least that is what I do.
I am yet to visit Ireland so that is all I can advise, but keep sharing details of which ATMs you have used and if you found some with no fees or ones with notes selection.
Thanks.

I once withdrew 80 € at an ATM in Killaloe with my DKB card and they didn't charge any fees.
